When your transport enters Rapture and stops, you'll see the man who was supposed to meet you murdered just outside. The murderer then tries to enter the bathysphere to get at you, but luckily they can't get in. After the murderer leaves, a man named Atlas calls you over the radio in the sphere. Thankfully, he's there to help.

As you proceed, Atlas shines some light ahead scaring away the murderer that was stalking you. After you jump over the debris and move into the light, Atlas asks you if you would kindly find a crowbar or something to defend yourself. Next to the tool box is your first weapon, the wrench. Pick it up and swing it with RT. Destroy the debris that is blocking the door way and crouch to move through the opening. At the other side is a staircase. Upon starting to move up the stairs, a flaming piece of couch comes your direction. Let it fall and continue up to face the first enemy inhabitant of Rapture a Thuggish Splicer. All that can be done at this point is bashing his skull with your wrench.

As you continue into the next room, you'll have you'll first "happy" lesson about Plasmids. It's not the prettiest thing to see, but you'll be able to shoot electricity out of your arm afterwards so I'm not complaining. Use your new great ability to short out an electric lock that will lead you into a tube-like hallway. Follow the hall down and through the giant piece of airplane that crashes through down to the next room.

In the next area you'll be fighting again, now that you have a neat new power, Atlas recommends the "1-2 punch". Hit the splicer with an Electro Bolt then whack him with the wrench. Deal with him and one more splicer, then move up the stairs. A burning Splicer will charge, hit him with an Electro Bolt. The next room has an elevator that will take you to a higher floor. On the way up Atlas provides some background info and requests you venture to Neptune's Bounty.

To the right in the next room, there is a shadow on the wall of a mother standing over a baby carriage comforting her child. As you approach its just a splicer comforting a pistol. Kill her and take her precious gun, your first shooting weapon. Continue forward and take out a couple more splicers, a couple of them can be easily dispatched by using your electricity on the water they're running across.

Eventually, you'll come to a couple of bathrooms, one of them, the "Gent's" bathroom, has a hole in the wall that leads you to the next area. You'll enter a scaffolding where Atlas will ask, "Would you kindly lower that weapon for a moment?" He wants to show you something in the area. Below you will notice a little girl stabbing a corpse with a syringe. Continue walking across the scaffolding to move to the other side of the room. Move down the stairs and look in the big window where the little girl is to get your first really good look at a Big Daddy. After it leaves, then bash the gold chain and lock with the wrench to open the gate.

Take care of a few more splicers as you progress. Nothing of any real interest happens until you reach Neptune's Bounty. Approaching Neptune's Bounty triggers an alarm that recruits a few Splicers to attack. They come from above and land in the water so they can be taken out easily. There was another that does not traverse the water but is not a problem for our handy dandy wrench. Follow Atlas' advice and detour through the Medical Pavilion. You become trapped and Ryan has a message for you. Once the message is over several Splicers are on their way to attack. Fortunately, Atlas is able to override the locks and get you out.
