Buriki One, or Buriki One: World Grapple Tournament '99 in Tokyo is a Japan-only 3D fighting game released in the arcades in 1999 using the ill-fated Hyper Neo-Geo 64 hardware. In fact, it was the last ever game to use one until it was immediately discontinued shortly after. Additionally, it was planned to have a home console port on the PlayStation 1, but it was never released. Because of the hardware's complexity, it was difficult to emulate on modern emulations like MAME for a very long time. Due to the system's flop in its native country, it has become a very rare game, with its price usually being very high. Despite this, the game has fostered a dedicated community in Japan, and it was hailed by many as ahead of its time for its innovative control scheme.
Story[edit | edit source]
The story takes place in 1999 and set in a MMA-like Tokyo Dome where fighters from all over the world compete using their own fighting style, ranging from Judo, Sumo Wrestling, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and the rest. The main protagonist of the game is Gai Tendo, a young, red-haired fighter, who's fighting style is a fictional version of the real life Mixed Martial Arts called Total Combat, which uses a chain-combo of punches, elbow strikes, kicks and shin kicks.
Both Gai Tendo and the villain Silber will later make their guest appearances in The King of Fighters XI.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
The gameplay, while similar to contemporary 3D fighting games of its time, is a bit different control scheme wise, with the character's movement being used as each individual buttons, while the joystick is used to execute a number of attacks depending on the direction. The player can drain the opponent's health bar (represented as a heartbeat), or like in some 3D fighting games like Virtua Fighter, they can knock the opponent out of the ring, but unlike those games, it doesn't result in a win, instead, the entire fight is paused for a bit as both fighters reenter the ring so they can resume.
