Call of Duty 4 uses ranks in multiplayer mode to measure the level of experience each online player has. As the player gets more practice online he/she receives experience points that add up in order to progress the player to higher levels. Upon reaching new ranks, the player usually unlocks new weapons, equipment, or perks to use in multiplayer combat. These rankings are based on real life United States Marine Corps and United States Army rankings.

- It may be noted that the ranks of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Sergeant Major, and First Sergeant aren't included in the game.

Prestige Rankings[edit]
- Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 Only
When the player elevates above the rank of Commander, he/she unlocks prestige mode. Playing in prestige mode makes the game resets their level back to 1 and all earned bonuses are lost in exchange for a special in-game insignia. This happens every time when unlocking a new prestige insignia. This means that the player must play a total of 605 levels to have the maximum possible ranking (55 Basic Rankings + (10 Prestige Levels * 55 Rankings)).
