The Dragon Quest series consists of numerous games in the main series and several spinoff titles. The series was localized as Dragon Warrior outside Japan, up until the 7th game. Remakes use the original title.

A notable feature of the series is that the monster designer is Akira Toriyama, mostly known for his manga Dragon Ball. Toriyama was also the monster designer for Chrono trigger.

Loto was localized as "Erdrick" outside Japan, and the Heaven Castle was localized as "Zenithia".

According to an interview, the "Heaven Castle trilogy" (known as "Zenithia Trilogy" in the localizations) is not supposed to be a trilogy. It was the fans who started considering it a trilogy, because all three games featured the Heaven Castle (Zenithia), and the label stuck to it.
