FASA Corporation was a company that developed tabletop games (primarily RPGs and strategy games). They formed a video game development group to leverage their IP (primarily Battletech/MechWarrior and Shadowrun), which was eventually spun off into FASA Interactive (or FASA Interactive Technologies/FIT). Eventually they were purchased by Virtual World Entertainment, and in turn Microsoft Game Studios (who kept FASA and sold VWE) (1999). Microsoft renamed the studio to FASA Studio, and moved them to Redmond, WA (near Microsoft's own headquarters).

FASA Studios, as a subsidiary of Microsoft, developed games exclusively for Windows, Xbox, and Xbox 360. During this time they developed MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, MechCommander 2, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Shadowrun.

In 2007, months after the release of Shadowrun, Microsoft shut down FASA Studios. In early 2008, they announced that they had licensed the FASA IP to Smith & Tinker, a company formed by Jordan Weisman (one of the founders of FASA) in 2007.
