Visual novels are games that focus on telling a story by displaying text, mostly dialog. While they may occasionally dip into other genres for a minigame or two, the central gameplay is reading text.

There are two main presentation styles, one style with blocks of narrative text that cover the screen and one dialog focused style that shows a dialog box along with a scene where the characters speak.

Visual novels often allow for branching storylines and can have elaborate menu based interactive moments.

They should not be confused for Text adventures, that genre focuses on a text based dialog between the player and the game. Visual novels do not have such a dialog between the player and the game.
