Unlocking technologies gives the player access to new units, buildings, wonders, resources, government types, Great Persons and more technologies. They are obtained by accumulating enough Science and by possessing the required lower-level technologies.

Science[edit]

Science, like Gold, may be converted from Trade. Its sole purpose is to be put towards the discovery of new technologies.

Science production may be improved by:

  • Building a Library (doubles science production in the city) or University (quadruples science production in the city)
  • Building one of the following wonders:
  • Settling a Great Scientist in a city (+50% Science in the city)
  • Using a Great Scientist to immediately complete the current research goal
  • Discovering the Lost City of Atlantis Mysterious Artifact (Provides 3x new technologies)
  • Assuming a Democratic government (+50% Science production in all cities)

List of technologies[edit]

  • "Tech-card" fields: The upper three fields of each "Tech-card" locate each technology in the overall technology tree, while the lower five fields indicate what items are made available as a result of discovering the technology.
  • Technology tiers: A technology's tier is equal to one greater than its highest tier prerequisite technology. This provies a measure of how advanced or late-game a specific technology is. Numbers in brackets beside each prerequisite technology represent its tier.
  • Overshadowed prerequisites: Technologies listed within curly brackets { } indicate an overshadowed prerequisite, i.e. its position as a prerequisite technology is largely redundant as another prerequisite technology would necessarily demand knowledge of the bracketed technology for the discovery of the former. To help illustrate this case, consider conducting research on Irrigation. This requires knowledge of both Masonry and Pottery. However, Masonry itself requires Pottery and hence should the player have researched Masonry, they must have researched Pottery was well.
    The exception to this case is when Technologies are obtained out of order through Village discovery, Technology trading, construction of certain Wonders, or the discovery of Mysterious Artifacts. In the case of Irrigation mentioned above, if the player say purchased the Masonry technology from another civilization, they may not conduct research on Irrigation until Pottery had also been discovered.
