Victory Conditions[edit]

There are several types of gameplay situations, the three original and traditional types are:

  • Terrorists try to plant and detonate a bomb successfully. Maps with this gameplay type start with "de_", e.g. "de_dust2".
  • Terrorists try to escape from Counter-Terrorists. (Terrorists have only their default weapon in this type of gameplay.) Maps with this gameplay type start with "es_", e.g. "es_trinity".
  • Counter-Terrorists try to rescue hostages. Maps with this gameplay type start with "cs_", e.g. "cs_assault".
  • Counter-Terrorists try to escort a VIP to an extraction point. (VIP has only the default Counter-Terrorist weapon, but 200 armor.) Maps with this gameplay type start with "as_", e.g. "as_oilrig".

Complimentary to those, if one team is wiped out, the other one wins. In the case of the VIP, if the VIP dies then the Terrorists win; but if all of the Terrorists are killed, then the Counter Terrorists win.

Most maps in CS are now played as pure death match games. "awp_" maps which are played only with Magnum Sniper Rifles, "aim_" maps which the aim is to aim right, "fy_" maps which are played with up to 6 or 8 players, "he_" which are played only with Grenades, "ka_" which are played only with Me Lee Knives, "dm_" which are various formats death match maps, "fun_" which are only for fun - not a tournament, "surf_" which are maps especially designed for surf emulation and the aim is not to fall to the floor, "scout_" which are maps which are played only with Schmidt Scout. All these maps put players in pure fight to the death situations.

Another type of gameplay, created through a mod, is deathmatch which replicates the Half-Life mode where players respawn soon after death in a random location, and it's a free for all.

Strategies[edit]

Flash Grenades[edit]

These grenades are cheap insurance, but only use them when not in a group of teammates. Bounce them off walls so that you won't get caught by the flash. When someone throws you a Flash Grenade turn your back to grenade in order not to blind completely.

Teamwork[edit]

Use teamwork. When someone says to "rush" a certain area, follow them. Most rushes work best when players do not stop, but run out and take as many of the enemy with them. However, many players prefer to hang back a little and let new people and/or experienced players to take care of large groups of enemies.
