Croc is a straightforward platform game for multiple systems. It has a structure divided by levels, grouped in some islands. Within the levels, you will have to explore the various areas, finding a way to proceed, until you reach a special gong that will allow you to complete the level. As you move through the levels, you will be hindered by Dantini, the servants of Baron Dante and other enemies (see the relevant page). You can kill them by crushing them or hitting them with the tail, but after a few seconds they will reappear. Instead, you will have to collect various useful items to proceed (here is the list) and save your little friends Gobbos. Every level has six Gobbos hidden somewhere within it. If you find all six, you have fully completed that level. You will also need to find five colored crystals, thanks to which at the end of the level you can open a special crystal door, beyond which there is a special area where you can get the last Gobbo of that level. Occasionally then, in the levels, to proceed you will have to solve some simple puzzles or successfully overcome mini games. As you progress, new levels are unlocked, and subsequently, new islands. Each island has a theme (e.g. snow) and comes with multiple bosses.

If Croc is hit by an enemy when he has at least one clear crystal with him, he will drop all the clear crystals collected so far, which will disappear after a few moments. The same thing happens if Croc falls on dangerous ground: he will drop the crystals and take a small leap. Try to take advantage of it to get back to safety. If Croc does not have any clear crystals with him on these occasions, he will lose a life. You will then immediately lose a life by falling into the void. Losing all available lives is game over. However, you will always have the opportunity to save the game between levels.

In the levels you will find many recurring elements, as follows:

CRATES
The contents of these crates are unknown and you will have to break them to find out. The only way to break a crate is to stomp it. Only underwater, can you open them with a tail strike. You can find them on the ground or even suspended in the air. Sometimes, however, these crates can also be used to reach items and elements that are above, so it is best to make sure they are not useful in any other way, before breaking them.

BUTTONS
You can press them by jumping on them. By pressing a button, something will change in the area you are. There are buttons that have a permanent effect and that will disappear after pressing them and others that have a temporary effect and that you can press several times.

MOVABLE CRATES
You can't break these crates, but you can push them by walking against them. The area within which you can move them is marked on the ground. Use them to reach otherwise inaccessible areas.

CLIMBABLE WALLS
Croc is able to climb some rock faces. They are smooth and with holes. Get up against them and Croc will automatically hang on.

MONKEY BARS
Croc is able to hang on to these bars. By jumping against them, Croc automatically clings. You can then move around hanging from the bars by pressing the directional buttons. To let go of the bars, press X.

DOUBLE ARROW PLATFORMS
These double arrow-shaped platforms can be moved horizontally by moving on the appropriate buttons and will allow you to overcome precipices or dangerous ground.

MULTI-ARROW PLATFORMS
As you step onto these platforms, they will continually move in the direction you are facing.

GONG
You will need to hit this gong with your tail to complete a level. The sound of the gong will bring your friend Beany the Bird to run and take you back to the map of the island. There are always two gongs in each level: one on the outside of the crystal door, which you will need to use if you haven't taken all the colored crystals, and one inside.

NORMAL DOOR
It is simply used to move from one area to another of the same level. As you approach it, it will open automatically.

DOOR WITH PADLOCK
To open these doors, you will need to be in possession of a golden key.

CRYSTAL DOOR
You will always find it near the exit gong. To open it, you need to be in possession of all five colored crystals of that level. Inside, you will find the last Gobbo and another exit gong.
