In normal mode the only status displayed is a clock. While you're in a village time progresses and you can see the sun and moon moving in the sky. At normal speed one game day is about 7 min. in real life. The clock dial reads:

Afternoon (right, blue)
Dusk (bottom, orange)
Night (left, purple)
Morning (top, yellow)

There are numerous other cues, such as birds singing in the morning, stars at night, etc. The game pauses to notify you of time of day and how many game days have passed at the four changes. The game starts on afternoon of the Day 1.

Display[edit]

Time does not pass inside dungeons to there is no clock, but there are a number of other important pieces of information.

Upper left: There are meters for your current health, the health you current weapon, how close your weapon is to be ready to upgrade, and your current thirst.
Upper center: You have three slots for active items. Use an item by highlighting it with Neutral dpad and pressing Square button. Place items in the active slots using the Item screen.
Upper right: The current level and whether you have the map and crystal for that level.
Center right: The map. It will be nearly empty at first since only areas you’ve explored appear. When you’ve opened the chest with a map inside the entire level will be visible. Your position and which direction you’re facing is shown as a pink arrow. Features of interest shown include the level entrance (green), level exit (yellow), transport to/from back level (magenta). Also shown are locations of monsters (red), treasure (yellow), and Atla (green). These locations are shown when you’ve opened the chest with the magic crystal. One chest with a map and one with a magic crystal appear in all normal dungeon levels.
Lower left: You current weapon and action meter. For most characters, using your weapon will empty the action meter and you will be unable to attack again until it fills up again. Some characters have special moves that need to be charged up and are ready when the action meter is full.
