FO Tournament Mode.png

In this mode, each team has their own Japanese text when controlled by the CPU, which they say to the players' chosen team at the start of each round:

Soviet Union: ウチャ最強だぜ (Ucha saikyōda ze)
Canada: ロッキーの冬はキビしいぜ (Rokkī no fuyu ha kibi shī ze)
Sweden: バルト海の水はツメテーぞ! (Barutokai no mizu ha tsumetē zo!)
Czechoslovakia: チェコの海岸物語なんちゃって! (Cheko no kaigan monogatari nanchatte!)
United States: アメリカイチバンデンワはニバン (Amerika ichiban denwa ha ni ban)
Finland: ヘルシンキヨイトコ一度はおいで (Herushinki yoitoko ichido ha oide)
France: わてはナポレオンだす (Wate ha Naporeon dasu)
Japan: ♪富士は日本一の山♫ (Fuji ha Nihon'ichi no yama)

Once you have pressed your 1 Player Button to initiate Tournament Mode (in which up to two players can compete four different CPU-controlled teams for each of the game's rounds), the team selection theme will start to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 and you will have ten seconds to select which team you want to take control of; once you have done so, you will have ten more seconds to decide whether you want the team to be comprised of three (LW controlled by Player 1 with RW and GK controlled by Player 2) or five (LW and LD controlled by Player 1, with RW, RD and GK controlled by Player 2) members, so choose the number that you are most comfortable playing with. The four CPU-controlled opposing teams will be predetermined for each round - and if you have selected the team that you would normally be facing on a specific round you will have to face the one that is positioned above or below it on the team selection screen instead. The first round will usually see you competing against the team of the then-current Czechoslovakia; but if you have chosen to take control of them, you will have to face this game's home team of Japan instead. Once you have managed to beat them, you will normally have to face the team of Sweden for that second round; however, if you have chosen to take control of them, you will have to face that team of France instead. Once you have managed to beat them, you will normally have to face the team of Canada on the third round - but if you have chosen to take control of them you will have to face the team of Finland instead. Once you have managed to beat them, you will normally have to face the team of the then-current Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, for that fourth and final round; however, if you have chosen to take control of them, you will have to face the team of the United States instead. Once you have managed to beat them, you can sit back and enjoy the ending sequence - which depicts four members of your chosen team (the goalie is not wearing his mask) speaking the Katakana text Wasshoi (ワッショイ) while throwing their fifth member up into the air, then speaking the Hiragana text A (あっ) before an enormous golden cup with Namco's logo and the Kanji text Yūshō (優勝) emblazoned on it comes down on top of them. The fifth member of the team will then land in front of the cup and pull out a sign from behind his back saying Oshimai (おしまい) in Hiragana - which means "that's it" in Japanese, and is the phrase which has been previously used in both Beraboh Man and Bakutotsu Kijūtei.

The screen will then cut to a shot of the scoreboard (which displays the Kanji text Shiai kashi 試合開始) as an organ-like jingle is heard from the Yamaha YM-2151; the match will then start as the introductory jingle is heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 and the four players on the screen have either the Kanji characters hidari (左) or migi (右) displayed above them in blue, green, yellow, and red, to indicate which player they are being controlled by. The referee will then drop the puck onto the pitch as the match's main theme starts to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 and the three-script text Botan wo tatake! (ボタンをたたけ!) appears on both sides of the monitor - and that yellow number on the left side of the monitor will also start counting down as well. When either of the goalkeepers catches the puck, that Katakana text Kyacchi (キャッチ) will appear on that team's side of the monitor; the referee will then drop the puck onto the pitch again as the three-script text of Botan wo tatake! (ボタンをたたけ!) appears on both sides of the monitor again. When either of the teams scores (any) goal, the player who had scored it will speak the Katakana text Yatta! (ヤッタ!) - and the screen will then cut to a shot of three female cheerleaders with turquoise, blue, and green hair dancing in front of an advertisement for three other Japan-exclusive Namco games that were released in the last third of 1988, as the current score is displayed below them. When a player from one team trips another player from the other team, the player who got tripped will speak the Katakana text Konoyarō! (コノヤロー!) as the Katakana text Penaruti (ペナルティ) appears on the offending player's side of the monitor; the three-script text of Penaruti ni yori 30 byōkan taijō!! (ペナルティにより30秒間退場!!) will then appear on that offending player's side of the monitor as he gets sent to the penalty area for thirty seconds. If neither team can manage to score a goal by the time the yellow number on the left side of the monitor has reached 0, the Katakana text Rasuto chansu (ラストチャンス) will appear on the screen - and the text Penaruti shūto (ペナルティシュート) will then appear on the right side of the monitor, as you have to take a penalty shot at the CPU team's goal. Regardless of whether the CPU's goalie has saved or not, the screen will then cut back to the scoreboard, which now displays the Kanji text Shiai kashi shūryō 試合開始終了 as another organ-like jingle is heard from the Yamaha YM-2151; you will then have ten seconds to insert another coin and continue your game as the continuation theme starts to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 as the losing team speaks the Hiragana/Kanji text Mada tochūda zo (まだ途中だぞ) and the Hiragana text Tsuzuki yarō (つづきやろう), to which the winning team will reply with the Hiragana text Yoshi yarō (よしやろう). However, if the score is tied, the winning team will speak the Katakana text Gamigami (ガミガミ), to which that losing team will reply with the Greek text ODCH (ΟΔΧ) - and the winning team will then speak the three-script text of Nattokuikanai na (納得いかないナ) and the Hiragana/Kanji texts Mōikkai yarō! (もう一回やろう!) and Mō 1 kai (もう1回).
