Fallout 4 starts in the pre-War family, just before the bombs drop, and just before the Sole Survivor gets put in cryogenic stasis for 210 years. After being freed, the survivor exits and begins the quest to try to retrieve the kidnapped baby.
As part of locating the son, there are four major factions that you will contact - the Minutemen, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Railroad, and the Institute.
