FS Pontypandy Map.png

You will first have to connect your Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC or Commodore 64 and cassette recorder up to your television set, then switch all three of them on; you must then place the cassette of Alternative Software's Bizarre Developments-developed 1991 action game, Fireman Sam, into the recorder, rewind it (unless it is your first time playing it), start it, and press J (twice), ' (twice) and Enter to load the program into the console. After the title screen has appeared and the game's rendition of the show's theme song has finished, Sam shall slide down a fire pole, and the text POSITION CASSETTE AT THE BEGINNING OF SIDE TWO. will appear on the teleprinter - and once you have done so you will have to use Q and A (for the ZX version) or push the joystick up and down (for the CPC and C64 versions) to select either "EASY" or "NORMAL" difficulty level, then press Space (in the ZX version) or the button (in the CPC and C64 versions) to confirm your choice. The game will then start at Pontypandy Fire Station (which is at the top-right of the map shown above), as the text of "A FIRE HAS BEEN REPORTED AT THE OLD LANE." appears on the teleprinter and Jupiter 999 drives off the left side of the screen; after that the Pontypandy Fire Brigade's "planetary" fire engine shall be under your control for the rest of the game.

To get to the Old Lane, continue driving forward, turn to the left, continue driving forward, turn to the right, continue driving forward, turn to the left, then continue driving forward, until you arrive at the position marked A on the map above; the screen will then cut to the above shot, which shows both Sam and his fellow firefighter, Elvis Cridlington, trying to extinguish the flames (press Space in the ZX version, or the button in the CPC and C64 versions, to make Elvis pump water out of the hose Sam's holding). Once the fire is out the text "REPORT BACK TO THE STATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." will appear on the teleprinter - and once you retrace your steps back to the Fire Station, that text "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE. NAUGHTY NORMAN HAS LOST HIS SKATEBOARD. CAN YOU FIND IT SAM?" ("Naughty Norman" being Norman Price) will appear on the teleprinter. Remember that its placement is randomly-generated, so once you've found it (by chance) the text "REPORT BACK TO THE STATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." will appear on the teleprinter; once you retrace your steps back to the Fire Station for a second time, that text "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE. CHEIF FIRE OFFICER STEELE HAS LOST THE KEY TO HIS OFFICE. CAN YOU FIND IT SAM?" will appear upon the teleprinter (its misspelling of "chief" is also accurate). Again, its placement is randomly-generated, so once you've found it by chance, the text "REPORT BACK TO THE STATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." will appear on the teleprinter - and once you retrace your steps back to the Fire Station (for a third time) that text "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE. DILYS PRICE HAS REPORTED A KITE LANDING ON HER ROOF." will appear on the teleprinter (you might see it flying up through the air!).

FS N. W. Price's General Store.png

To get to N.W. Price's General Store, start driving forward, turn to the left, continue driving forward, turn to the left, continue driving forward, turn to the left and continue driving forward until you arrive at the position marked E on the map above; the text "START TAPE" shall then appear on screen, and once you have done so, the screen will cut to the bottom of the above shot which shows Sam in front of N.W. Price's Store. Walk to the left, jump over the rollerskate as it rolls towards Sam, climb up the ladder to the top of the store sign, jump over the three banana skins as they fall from the top of the screen and climb up the ladder to the roof - the text of "STOP TAPE" shall then appear on the screen, and once you have done so, the text "REPORT BACK TO THE STATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." shall appear on the teleprinter. Once you have retraced your steps back to the Fire Station for a fourth time, the text of "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE. TREVOR HAS LOST THE HAMMER FROM THE TOOL BOX. CAN YOU FIND IT SAM?" shall appear on the teleprinter; once again, its placement is randomly-generated, so once you have found it (by chance), the text "REPORT BACK TO THE STATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." will appear on the teleprinter. Once you report back to the Fire Station, for a fifth time, the text "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE." will appear on the teleprinter - and the message that Norman Price has lost his skateboard shall then appear on it again. Once you have found it by chance again and reported back to the Fire Station for the sixth time, the text "NAUGHTY NORMAN HAS HIS HEAD STUCK IN THE RAILINGS OUTSIDE BELLA'S CAFE." will appear on the teleprinter; this is the last unique emergency you will have to drive Jupiter 999 to for a cycle.

FS Bella Lasagne's Cafe.png

To get to Bella's, drive on forward, turn to the left, continue driving forward, turn to the left, continue driving forward, and turn to the right to arrive at the position marked F on the map above; the screen will then cut to the above shot, which shows Sam and his fellow firefighters (the aforementioned Elvis Cridlington, Station Officer Steele, and Bus Driver Trevor Evans) trying to bend the railings, and free Norman Price. Press Space (in the ZX version) or the button (in the CPC and C64 versions) to make them all tug on the rope and bend the railings - and the text of "REPORT BACK TO THE STATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE." will appear on the teleprinter. Once you have retraced your steps back to the Fire Station for a seventh time, the text "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE." will appear upon the teleprinter; the message that "Cheif" Fire Officer Steele has lost the key to his office will then appear on it again. Once you have found it again by chance (and reported back to the Fire Station for the eighth time), the text "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE." will appear on the teleprinter - and the message that Trevor Evans has lost the hammer from his tool box will then appear upon it again. Once you have found it again by chance and reported back to the Fire Station for a ninth time, the text of "ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE." will appear on the teleprinter; the cycle will now start all over again (only this time with the text "A FIRE HAS BEEN REPORTED AT THE OLD BARN." on the teleprinter).

To get to the Old Barn, drive forward, turn to your left, continue driving forward, turn to the left, continue driving forward, turn to the right, continue driving forward, turn to the right, and continue driving forward, until you arrive at the position marked B on the map above; the third cycle will also begin with the text "A FIRE HAS BEEN REPORTED AT PENNY'S HOUSE." appearing on the teleprinter, although she lived in Newtown, Powys. To get there, you will have to retrace your steps back to the Old Barn, turn to the left, and continue driving forward, until you arrive at the position marked C on the map above - and the fourth cycle shall begin with the text "A FIRE HAS BEEN REPORTED AT TREVOR'S HOUSE." appearing on the teleprinter. To get there, you shall have to retrace your steps, back to N. W. Price's General Stores, continue driving forward, turn to the right, continue driving forward, turn to the left and continue driving forward, until you arrive at the position marked D on the map above; the game shall continue until Sam gets three warnings, or you decide to turn off the console (unlike a lot of other Alternative Software games that were based on television shows, this one does not have an ending!). Also, although Firefighter Penny Morris's house is present, she doesn't appear to help the other firefighters bend the railings and free Norman Price.
