Garfield Big Fat Hairy Deal title screen (ZX Spectrum).png

You will first have to connect your Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 or Commodore Amiga (and cassette recorder, in the case of the ZX, CPC, and C64 versions) to your television, then switch all three (or both, for the case of the Commodore Amiga version) of them on; you'll then have to place the cassette (or disk, for the Commodore Amiga version) of The Edge's Softek International-developed 1988 adventure game Garfield: Big, Fat, Hairy Deal into the cassette recorder (or the console itself, in the Commodore Amiga version), rewind it (unless it is your first time playing it), type LOAD "" (without leaving a space between the quotation marks), and press Enter to load the program into the console (or wait for it to load automatically, for the Commodore Amiga version). For the ZX version, you will then have to press 1 for keyboard control, 2 for Sinclair joystick control (if connected), 3 for Kempston joystick control (again, if connected), or 4 to redefine the keys - however, for the CPC version, only options 1, 3, and 4 are present, (so options 3 and 4 will be 2 and 3!). The C64 and Amiga versions are also joystick-only; however, on the former's title screen, you can press F1 and F3 to turn the music (which is, again, a remix of that then-new Film Roman television series' original theme!) and sound effects on and off. A solution for the game was published in Crash magazine in March 1989, and another one was published in Your Sinclair magazine four years later in April 1993.

Once Garfield has appeared on the fourth screen of the seventh row of the map above, the text Oh no, not another day. will appear at the bottom of the screen; sadly, Garfield's dialogue was not rendered as speech samples by his voice actor, Lorenzo Music (1937-2001). You will first have to walk to the right onto the eighth screen (whenever Odie follows Garfield onto a screen, he will say Hi Odie, and when he kicks him, he will say BAP take that Odie), then drop down to the first screen of the eighth row (Garfield says dum de dum de dum once he lands on the chest, but the enormous rat who's running back and forth on the ground will say HERE KITTY KITTY...), drop down to the ground when that rat is on the other side of the screen, kick the chest to open it (a bone and a key will come out of it, and when Garfield picks up the latter he will say A key for the City Pound!), and jump back up to the eighth screen of the seventh row - and if Garfield had been hit too many times by the rat (but not "put to sleep"), he will say I'm getting tired, in which case you shall have to drop the key, retrace your steps back to the sixth screen, jump onto the stool and table in turn, and drink John's cup of coffee (Garfield will say WOW, a nice cup of coffee, once he has finished). You will then have to retrace your steps back to the third screen (even if Garfield has just kicked Odie, he will say Where's that stupid dog once he walks back onto the fifth one), pick up the aniseed balls (Garfield will say Aniseed balls, yuk, not nice once he has done so, and if he gets hungry enough, he will say SNACK ATTACK!), retrace your steps back to the eighth screen, pick up the key again, retrace your steps back to the third screen again and go through the door to the second screen of the sixth row; you will then have to walk onto, and off the right side of, the eighth screen to be warped to the first screen of the first row, walk off the left side of that screen onto the first screen of the second row (after walking around for a bit, Garfield will say Oh boy, am I getting hungry...), walk onto the second screen, drop the key, pick up the pie (Garfield will say A steaming hot blueberry pie), eat it (Garfield will say I needed that), pick up the key again, retrace your steps back to the first screen and walk off the left side of it onto the fourth screen of the third row. You must now walk onto and off the right side of the sixth screen onto the seventh screen of the fourth row, walk off the left side of this screen onto the fourth screen (another thing Garfield may say after walking around for a bit is a catchphrase from the strips and then-new television show Oh boy, I hate Mondays), go through the door to the second screen of the third row, drop the key, retrace your steps back to the sixth screen of the third row, pick up the hamburger (Garfield will say woo, heavy on the relish please, once he's done so), eat it (this time, Garfield will say That was tasty once he has finished), retrace your steps back to the eighth screen of the sixth row, and go through the door to that second screen of that fifth row - and you will then have to jump up onto the counter, pick up the spade (Garfield will ask How much is this spade worth? once he's done so), retrace your steps back to the fourth row's fourth screen, walk back onto the second screen and go through the door to the first screen of the third row. You shall now have to drop the spade (the man behind the counter will drop a dollar bill onto the ground once Garfield has done so), pick up the bill (Garfield will say Hey great, let's get some food once he has done so), walk back onto, and off the left side of, the first screen the fourth row to warp to the eighth screen, walk back onto the sixth screen and go through the door to the ninth screen of the third row; you shall now have to drop the dollar bill (the man behind the counter will drop a bowl of birdseed onto the ground once Garfield does so), pick up the bowl (Garfield will say Hmmm, birds in the park! once he has done so), retrace your steps back to the second screen of the third row, drop the bowl (Garfield will say Catch that bird! as a seagull flies into view from the right side of the screen), pick up the key (remember that you'd left it there), grab onto the seagull's legs (Garfield shall say Look, I can fly once he's done so) to warp to the eighth screen and go through the door to the fourth screen of the second row. You shall then have to walk off the right side of this screen onto the fifth screen to be reunited with Arlene - and the text Nice one Garfield. See you in Paradise. will then appear on the screen. Garfield will later return to ZX, CPC, C64 and Amiga screens the following year, for Garfield: A Winter's Tail.
