B-1[edit]

Starting from a stationary position, this test will measure how quickly you can bring the car to a complete stop after reaching the 100 metre mark. Rather than simply guessing the timing and gradually braking, it is advisable to keep an eye on the trackside distance indicators to find the optimum braking point.

This time you will start from a stationary position and bring your car to a complete stop within a goal area 200 metres away, in a short a time as possible. As the distance increases, the top speed that the car reaches also increases, and so a longer braking distance is required. Use the distance indicators placed every 100 metres as a guide to remember the correct point at which to brake.

Here you can study the out-in-out racing line using the first corner of the Deep Forest course. While you are accelerating hard down the straight, move to the outside of the course and approach the corner from as wide an angle as possible. Once you reach the inside kerb, maintain a constant level of acceleration and hold this position. Be careful because if you get too excited and slam down hard on the accelerator, the car will understeer (drift to the outside of the corner), and you will come off the track as you exit the corner.

This is the same corner of Deep Forest as the previous test, but this time you are driving a relatively powerful front-engined, rear-wheel drive car. With the extra power available you can reach greater speeds, so apply the brakes firmly from the outside of the bend to enter the corner correctly. Once you reach the inside of the corner, keep the acceleration constant and be patient as in the previous test. Be careful - if you get too excited and slam the accelerator down too hard, the car will understeer and you will come off the track as you exit the corner.

This is one lap of the Tsukuba circuit following a pace car so that you can solidly memorise the course. Try as much as possible to trace out the same line as the pace car. If you speed up, the pace car will also speed up, and if you slow down, the pace car will also slow down. Be careful, you will be disqualified if you hit the pace car too hard whilst trying to overtake. Although it is a compact circuit, Tsukuba lets you fully adjust to the driving basics. Drive through the course slowly at first to become familiar with the characteristics of the course.

We return once again to the Test Course where the test will take place over a relatively long distance. You begin from a stationary position, and need to stop the car precisely in a defined goal area 500m away. As the car will reach a fairly high speed, it is quite tricky to find the correct braking point. It is therefore advisable to make effective use of the distance indicators that are located every 100 metres.

This is the final starting and stopping test. This time, you are driving a high powered front-engined, rear-wheel drive Dodge Viper and will need to stop the car in a goal area 1000m away. Because you will be braking from a speed of well over 200kmh, the braking point comes up much faster than you would imagine. Thoroughly memorise that point. Braking from very high speeds is essential in races - make sure that you master it.

For this test you will study cornering basics using the final bend of the Twin Ring Motegi East course. The training car is a Mazda MX5. Although this is a right hairpin similar to the one that previously appeared in the Deep Forest test, the corner radius is much smaller and so you need to apply the brakes firmly at an earlier point. Try to turn using the widest line possible without thinking too much abut getting to the inside from the beginning.

Coffee Break[edit]

This stage is like a relaxing coffee break, so enjoy the fairground ride feel of the course. A number of cones have been arranged in front of you. Race through the area without touching any of the cones then stop in the goal area at the end. As the path you can take through the course is completely free, you need to decide in advance the easiest driving route.

This time you will try driving a relatively powerful car through the same corner of the Motegi East course as in the previous test. The training car is a BMW M3 CSL. Try to use the distance indicators beside the course effectively. If you accelerate too early as you come out of the corners, the car will spin due to it's increased power. Take care not to run up on the inside kerb as you could lose traction and the car will spin.

This time you will follow a pace car for one lap around the undulating Laguna Seca Raceway. As the object of this test is to become familiar with the layout of the track, there is no need to keep track of your time from the beginning it is important that you try as much as possible to follow the same racing line as the pace car. The famous blind-corner in the middle of the circuit called "the Corkscrew" is a left-hand bend, and given the lack of visibility try to get a feel for the distance to the corner of when you have to brake.

This is a test of car control on dirt roads taking place on the hairpin corner of the Grand Canyon. Come out of the first gentle right-hand bend at full acceleration and approach the following left hairpin from as wide an angle as you can. Try hard not to lose too much speed on the exit from the hairpin. Steering and braking response will be dulled by the dirt surface, and skilled handling of this reduced response is the key to reducing your time.

This is a test of how fast you can race through a high speed, right-hand corner on a dirt road in the Swiss Alps. Because the "mu" factor (the friction coefficient of the road surface) is so much lower than a tarmac road, you need to drive without depending on the steering. The direction of the car will change after a high-speed section due to the effects of inertia and braking, so you should try to take as direct a line as possible on the exits. In addition to the bumpiness of the road surface, the corners become bowl-shaped towards the inside, so you should be careful not to lose your line.

This is a high-speed cornering test that uses the final corner of the Tsukuba Circuit. After starting at 50kmh, lightly brake as you approach the corner from the outside of the track. You should then move fairly quickly to the inside of the corner, and hug the inside kerb. Make sure you take care to keep the acceleration constant during this section. Just as the kerb eds, depress the accelerator and the car will drift to the outside as it comes out of the corner.

Try again to tackle high-speed cornering using the first corner of the El Capitan course. The main point of difference from the final corner in the Tsukuba circuit is that the turn stretches further back. Once you are on the inside of the corner, be very patient with the accelerator until you are near the exit of the turn. Although it is easy to unintentionally step on the accelerator too early, doing so will cause the car to understeer and ride up onto the embankment at the exit from the corner. Try this over and over until you find the best spot to begin accelerating.

Here you will follow a pace car around the popular American circuit, Infineon Raceway. A feature of this course is the large number of high-speed corners where you only need a slight touch of the brakes. Be careful because this course also has up and downhill sections and corners that are hidden behind hills. You will be disqualified if you hit the pace car too hard so memorise the course well and take care.

B-16[edit]

The graduation test for the National "B" Licence requires defeating the in-field section of the Tsukuba circuit. Drive from the exit of the first hairpin to the back straight as fast as you can. If you can get a good line through the right corner under the Dunlop Bridge just after the start, you should be able to run at full acceleration. Be careful not to throw your car into the following second hairpin too hard. Although it looks easy, this is a deceptive course and takes a while to get used to, so you should give it considerable practice.
