A plane flies in, and lands on Gourd Lake. It's the private plane of President Di-Jun Huang of the Republic of Zheng Fa, who is beginning his visit to the country by giving a speech to the crowd, who have come from far and wide to Gourd Lake Park. As he speaks, however, a gun is readied...

The character you control in this game, an intelligent and respected prosecutor. Called in to investigate President Huang's attempted assassination at the Chief Prosecutor's express request.

The fearsome and intimidating president of the East Asian Republic of Zheng Fa. An attempt was made on his life while he gave a speech on the banks of Gourd Lake.

Nicole Swift / 速水 ミキコ (はやみ みきこ Hayami Mikiko)
A so-called "investigative reporter" who lives for the next “big scoop”. She was recording and reporting on President Huang's speech at the time of the incident. Her speech and mannerisms may remind you of someone you've worked with in the past.
John Doe / 田中 太郎 (たなか たろう Tanaka Tarō)
An ice cream salesman who was in attendance during President Huang's speech, who attracts Edgeworth's suspicion. You get the impression you know this person from somewhere, but where...?
Horace Knightley / 内藤 馬乃介 (ないとう まのすけ Naitō Manosuke)
A gun-toting, chess-loving bodyguard who was present on stage during the assassination attempt. His neck injury means he is unable to turn his head to his right.

A homicide detective with the local police force. Edgeworth's bumbling but usually trustworthy assistant who helps (re-)introduce you to the game's methods of crime scene investigation.
Kay Faraday / 一条 美雲 (いちじょう みくも Ichijō Mikumo)
Edgeworth's self-appointed assistant, and the self-proclaimed successor to the Great Thief Yatagarasu. She was in attendance during President Huang's speech, and arrives to help "steal the truth" with a vital piece of evidence.
Winston Payne / 亜内 武文 (あうち たけふみ Auchi Takefumi)
A prosecutor who has long fallen from grace. He is known as the “Rookie Killer”, but hasn’t actually defeated any rookies since a certain case involving a now-deceased spirit medium-cum-lawyer five years ago. He was at the speech in the company of the Chief Prosecutor.
Ethan Rooke / 外城 涯 (とじろ がい Tojiro Gai)
A professional bodyguard, and President Huang's most trusted subordinate. He was in charge of the security during the President's speech.
