Hopping Mappy title screen.png

Namco's 1986 arcade game Hopping Mappy is comprised of thirty-one rounds (twenty-four regular, and seven bonus); at the start of each regular round (along with every new life), the text "HOP TO IT PLAYER ONE/TWO" shall be displayed on the screen. The images of the twenty-four regular rounds on this page show the positions of the stolen items (along with where the Boxes will appear if you satisfy their conditions) for each garden in addition to the characters' starting positions - and on the seven bonus rounds (which are every fourth one), Mappy has to collect as many balloons as he can while the screen automatically scrolls to the right. To keep up with the screen, you will have to hold the Acceleration Button down while pushing the joystick to the right, because the round shall immediately end if Mappy is scrolled off the screen; furthermore, the first eight red balloons (HM Red Balloon.gif) Mappy collects are worth 11 points, but the ninth to sixteenth ones are worth 22 points, the seventeenth to twenty-fourth ones are worth 33 points, the twenty-fifth to thirty-second ones are worth 55 points, the thirty-third to fortieth ones are worth 111 points, and all subsequent ones are worth 222 points. There are usually about 48 to 50 red balloons per round - and if you see a large group of them, you should try to collect as many of them as you can, but if one is too far away from your current position, you should not go bouncing all the way up or down the garden to collect it as Mappy may be scrolled off the screen before he can reach it. The Nyamco balloons (HM Nyamco Balloon.gif) are also always worth 500 points, and they should be your main priority in the early part of a round as their value is worth at least that of the first twenty red balloons Mappy will pick up; however, there are usually only about three or four Nyamco balloons per round.

Round 1[edit]

HM Round 1.png
  • This garden contains one Mewky, and he will be bouncing vertically across the fourth column of the playfield (where one of the Maneki Neko is).
  • The best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red diamond or the yellow diamond (for points).

Round 2[edit]

HM Round 2.png
  • This garden contains three Mewkies, the first of whom will be bouncing horizontally across the third row of the playfield (where one of the Kitsune is). The second and third ones, however, will be bouncing vertically across the eighth and tenth columns of playfield (where no other items are).
  • Once again, the best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red diamond or the yellow diamond.

Round 3[edit]

HM Round 3.png
  • This garden contains seven Mewkies, the first of whom will be bouncing vertically across the second column of the playfield (this is where one of the Maneki Neko is). The second and third ones will be bouncing horizontally, across the second (this is where one of the Daruma is) and fourth (it's where one of the Kitsune and Snowmen are) rows of the playfield, the fourth and fifth ones will be bouncing vertically across the eleventh and twelfth (where the other Daruma is) columns of the playfield, and the sixth and seventh ones will be bouncing horizontally across the sixth (where the other Maneki Neko is) and first (where the other Kitsune is) rows of the playfield. Only that other Snowman is not in one of their bounce paths.
  • If you manage to make the Box appear on this round, the letters "M-A-P-P-Y" will emerge from it instead of the standard powerups for an extra life.

Round 5[edit]

HM Round 5.png
  • This garden contains six Mewkies, and they will all be bouncing vertically across the fourth column of the playfield (where none of the items are).
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass or the pink hourglass (for making the cats vulnerable or freezing them for a short period of time; the effects of these will eventually wear off though).

Round 6[edit]

HM Round 6.png
  • This garden contains nine Mewkies, the first and second of whom will be bouncing horizontally across the second (it's where one of the Kitsune, one of the Snowmen, and one of the Maneki Neko are) and fourth (where the other Kitsune and one of the Daruma are) rows of the playfield. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth ones will be bouncing vertically across the fourth (where the other Maneki Neko is), seventh, eighth and ninth columns of the playfield, and the seventh, eighth and ninth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the first, third (where the other Snowman is) and fifth (where the other Daruma is) rows of the playfield. None of the items on this round are out of their bounce paths - so you will have to time it right.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 7[edit]

HM Round 7.png
  • This garden contains eight Mewkies, the first and second of whom will be bouncing vertically across the third and ninth (where one of Kitsune is) columns of the playfield. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the first (where one of the Snowmen is), third (where one of the Maneki Neko and the other Kitsune are), fourth (where one of the Daruma is) and sixth (where the other Snowman is) rows of the playfield, and the seventh and eighth ones will be bouncing vertically across the fourteenth and fifteenth columns of the playfield (no others).
  • For a second time, the best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red heart or the yellow heart.

Round 9[edit]

HM Round 9.png
  • This garden contains nine Mewkies - and the first, second and third ones will be bouncing vertically across the second (where both Maneki Neko are) and fourth (where both Kitsune are) columns of the playfield. The fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth ones are bouncing horizontally across the first, second (where one of the Snowmen and one of the Daruma are), third, fourth (where the other Daruma and the other Snowman are) and fifth rows of the playfield. Again, none of the items on this round are out of their bouncing paths - you have to time it right to avoid dying.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass or the pink hourglass (for making the cats vulnerable or freezing them for a short period of time; the effects of these will eventually wear off though).

Round 10[edit]

HM Round 10.png
  • This garden contains ten Mewkies - and the first, second, and third ones will be bouncing horizontally across the first (where both Kitsune are), second (where one of the Maneki Neko and one of the Daruma are) and fourth rows of the playfield. The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh ones will be bouncing vertically across the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth columns of the playfield, and the seventh, eighth and ninth ones will also be off bouncing horizontally across the first, second and fourth rows of the playfield. The other Daruma, the other Maneki Neko and both Snowmen are not in their bounce paths, so you can collect them safely unless Nyamco has fallen over on one of their squares and you can jump on top of him.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 11[edit]

HM Round 11.png
  • This garden contains eleven Mewkies - and the first one will be bouncing vertically across the first column of the playfield. The second and third ones will be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield, the fourth one will be bouncing horizontally across the third row of the playfield (where both of the Snowmen are), the fifth, sixth and seventh and eighth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield (where one of the Daruma is), the ninth one will be bouncing horizontally across the fifth row of the playfield (where one of the Kitsune and one of the Maneki Neko are), the tenth one will be bouncing horizontally across the sixth row of the playfield, and the eleventh one will be bouncing vertically across the sixteenth column of the playfield. The other Daruma and the other Maneki Neko are not in their bouncing paths.
  • For a fourth time, the best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red heart or the yellow heart.

Round 13[edit]

HM Round 13.png
  • This garden contains nine Mewkies - and the first, second and third ones will be bouncing vertically across the fourth column of the playfield. The fourth one will be bouncing vertically across the fifth column of the playfield (where one of the Maneki Neko is), and the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth ones will be bouncing vertically across the sixth column of the playfield. None of the other items are in their bouncing paths, so they're safe.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass or the pink hourglass (for making the cats vulnerable or freezing them for a short period of time; the effects of these will eventually wear off though).

Round 14[edit]

HM Round 14.png
  • This garden contains twelve Mewkies - and the first one will be bouncing vertically across the second column of the playfield (where one of the Daruma and one of the Snowmen are). The second and third ones will be bouncing horizontally across the second (where the other Snowman is) and third (where the other Daruma is) rows of the playfield, the fourth one will be bouncing vertically across the fourth column of the playfield, the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth ones will be bouncing vertically across the sixth, seventh (where both Maneki Neko are) and eighth (where one of th Kitsune is) columns of the playfield, the ninth and tenth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the sixth and fifth rows of the playfield, and the eleventh and twelfth ones will be bouncing vertically across the fourteenth and sixteenth columns of the playfield. The other Kitsune is out of their bouncing paths, so you can collect it safely unless Nyamco has fallen over on its square and you will have the chance to jump on top of him.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 15[edit]

HM Round 15.png
  • This garden contains six Mewkies - and they will all be bouncing horizontally across the six individual rows of the playfield. Not only does this fact mean that none of the items are out of their bouncing paths, it also means that you will have to do a slow vertical bounce when they are bouncing towards you (without holding down the acceleration button) and pull back once they have bypassed you in order to avoid getting impaled by them.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass, the pink hourglass, the blue ball or the purple ball (for making the cats vulnerable, freezing them for short period of time, or just slowing them down).

Round 17[edit]

HM Round 17.png

Round 18[edit]

HM Round 18.png
  • This garden contains eleven Mewkies - and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the individual rows of the playfield. The seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh ones will be bouncing vertically, across the sixth, seventh, ninth, tenth, and eleventh columns of the playfield. None of the items on this round are out of their bouncing paths - so you will have to time your bounces right.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 19[edit]

HM Round 19.png
  • This garden contains fifteen Mewkies - and the first and second ones will be bouncing horizontally across the first (where one of the Daruma and one of the Snowmen are), and fourth (where one of the Maneki Neko is), rows of the playfield. The third and fourth ones are bouncing horizontally across the second and fifth rows of the playfield, the fifth one will be bouncing vertically across the sixth column of playfield, the sixth and seventh ones will be bouncing horizontally across the third (where both of the Kitsune are) and sixth (where the other Snowman and Daruma are) rows of the playfield, the eighth and ninth ones will also be bouncing horizontally, across the second and fifth rows of the playfield, the tenth and eleventh ones will be bouncing vertically across the twelfth (where the other Maneki Neko is), and thirteenth columns of the playfield, while the twelfth one will also be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield, the thirteenth one will be bouncing vertically, across the fifteenth column the playfield, and the fourteenth and fifteenth ones will be bouncing vertically across the sixteenth column of the playfield. No item is out of path.
  • For a sixth time now, the best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart.

Round 21[edit]

HM Round 21.png
  • This garden contains nine Mewkies - and they will all be bouncing vertically across the nine individual columns of the playfield. Once again, not only does this mean that none of the items are out of their bouncing paths, it also means that you will have to do a slow horizontal bounce when they are bouncing towards you and pull back once they have bypassed you in order to avoid getting impaled by them (vertically this time around).
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass, the pink hourglass, the blue ball or the purple ball (for making the cats vulnerable, freezing them for short period of time, or just slowing them down).

Round 22[edit]

HM Round 22.png
  • This garden contains fourteen Mewkies - and the first and second ones will be bouncing horizontally across the first row of the playfield (where one of the Maneki Neko is). The third and fourth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield (this is where one of the Kitsune, one of the Snowmen, and one of the Daruma are), the fifth and sixth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the third row of the playfield (where the other Maneki Neko is), the seventh and eighth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield, the ninth and tenth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fifth row of the playfield (where the other Kitsune is), the eleventh and twelfth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the sixth row of the playfield (where the other Daruma and Snowman are), and the thirteenth and fourteenth ones will be bouncing vertically across the fifth and sixth columns of the playfield. None of the items on this round are out of their bouncing path.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 23[edit]

HM Round 23.png
  • This garden contains fifteen Mewkies - and the first one will be abouncing vertically across the second column of the playfield. The second and third ones will be abouncing vertically, across the fourth column of the playfield (where one of the Snowmen is), the fourth and fifth ones will be abouncing horizontally across the first row of the playfield (where one of the Kitsune and both the Daruma are), the sixth and seventh ones will be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield (where the other Snowman is), the eighth and ninth ones bouncing horizontally across the third row of the playfield (where one of the Maneki Neko is), the tenth and eleventh ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield (where the other Kitsune is), the twelfth one will be bouncing horizontally across the fifth row of the playfield, the thirteenth and fourteenth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the sixth row of the playfield (it is where the other Snowman and the other Maneki Neko are), and the fifteenth one will be bouncing vertically across the thirteenth column of the playfield. None of the items on this round are out of their paths.
  • For a eighth time now, the best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart.

HM Round 25.png
  • This garden contains fifteen Mewkies - and the first one will be bouncing vertically across the first column of the playfield (it is where one of the Kitsune is). The second and third ones will be bouncing vertically across the second column of the playfield (where one of the Maneki Neko is), the fourth and fifth ones will be bouncing vertically across the third column of the playfield (where one of the Snowmen is), the sixth and seventh ones will be bouncing vertically across the fourth column of the playfield (where one of the Daruma is), the eighth one will be bouncing vertically across the fifth column of the playfield (where the other Snowman is), the ninth and tenth ones will be bouncing vertically across the sixth column of the playfield, the eleventh and twelfth ones will be bouncing vertically across the seventh column of the playfield (where the other Maneki Neko is), the thirteenth and fourteenth ones will be bouncing vertically, across the eighth column of the playfield (where the other Daruma is), and that fifteenth one will be bouncing vertically across the ninth column of the playfield (where the other Kitsune is). No item is out of their bouncing path.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass, the pink hourglass, the blue ball or the purple ball (for making the cats vulnerable, freezing them for short period of time, or just slowing them down).

Round 26[edit]

HM Round 26.png
  • This garden contains nine Mewkies - and the first one will be bouncing vertically across the second column of the playfield. The second and third ones will be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield (it where one of the Daruma is), the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield, and the eighth and ninth ones will be bouncing off horizontally across the sixth row of the playfield (where one of the Maneki Neko is). Both of the Kitsune, both of the Snowmen, the other Daruma, and the other Maneki Neko are out of their bouncing paths, so you can collect them safely unless Nyamco has fallen over on one of their squares and you can jump on him.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 27[edit]

HM Round 27.png
  • This garden contains thirteen Mewkies - and the first one will be bouncing vertically, across the first column of the playfield. The second one will be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield (it's where one of the Maneki Neko is), the third one will be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield (it's where both Daruma and one of the Snowmen are), the fourth one will also be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield, the fifth one will be bouncing off vertically across the seventh column of the playfield, the sixth one will be bouncing horizontally across the fifth row of the playfield, the seventh one will be bouncing horizontally across the third row of the playfield (where the other Maneki Neko is), the eighth and ninth ones will be bouncing vertically across the eleventh (it's where the other Snowman is) and twelfth columns of the playfield, the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth ones will be bouncing off vertically, across the thirteenth column of the playfield, and that thirteenth one will be bouncing vertically, across the fifteenth column of the playfield. None of items on this round are out of their bouncing paths.
  • For a tenth time now, the best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart.

Round 29[edit]

HM Round 29.png
  • This garden contains fourteen Mewkies - and all of the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth ones will be bouncing off vertically across the nine individual columns of the playfield. This means that you will have to do another slow horizontal bounce when they are bouncing towards you and pull back for a second time once they have passed by in order to avoid getting impaled by them. The tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth ones, though, will be bouncing horizontally across the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth rows of the playfield.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart, the yellow heart, the blue hourglass, the pink hourglass, the blue ball or the purple ball (for making the cats vulnerable, freezing them for short period of time, or just slowing them down).

Round 30[edit]

HM Round 30.png
  • This garden contains fourteen Mewkies - and the first one will be bouncing horizontally across the second row of the playfield (where one of each type of item is). The second and third ones are bouncing horizontally across the third row of the playfield (where the other Snowman and Daruma are), the fourth, fifth and sixth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fourth row of the playfield (this is where the other Maneki Neko is), the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth ones will be bouncing horizontally across the fifth row of the playfield (this is where the other Kitsune is), and the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth ones are bouncing horizontally across sixth row of playfield. No item on this round is out of their paths.
  • The best powerup to go after on this round if you manage to make the Box appear is either the red heart or the yellow heart (for cat vulnerability).

Round 31[edit]

HM Round 31.png
  • This garden contains twelve Mewkies - and the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth ones will be bouncing vertically across the six individual rows of the playfield. Once again, not only does this mean that none of the items are out of their bouncing path, it also means that you will have yet another slow vertical bounce to do when they are bouncing towards you and pull back once they have bypassed you in order to avoid getting impaled by them. The seventh, eighth and ninth ones will be bouncing vertically across the fourteenth column of the playfield (where one of each type of item is), and the tenth, eleventh and twelfth ones will be bouncing vertically across the fifteenth column of the playfield (where the other of each type of item is). None of the items on this round are out of the last six Mewkies' bouncing paths, so you will have to time your bounces right.
  • For twelfth time now, the best powerup to go after on this round, if you manage to make the Box appear, is either the red heart or the yellow heart.
Hopping Mappy ending.png

Once you have managed to clear this round, the increased-tempo version of the game's main theme will start to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 as the text "CONGRATULATIONS!" appears on the screen, with "YOU HAVE COMPLETE", "HOPPING MAPPY" (the H and M are also bigger than all the other letters), and "THANK YOU FOR YOUR PLAYING!" beneath it; the text "© 1983, 1986 NAMCO, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED" will then appear at the bottom of the screen as Mappy's bouncing sound starts to be heard from the Namco CUS-30 in time with the music. After the music ends, the game will go into high-score mode - and your score will most likely be the highest value on the cabinet to date, so you should enter your name (seven characters) at the top of the table with pride by pushing the joystick up and down to change the highlighted character in the preset name "WHO-RU?", then pushing it to the right to move the highlight to the next character (you may also push it back to the left to return the highlight to the previous character if you wish to change it again). After you have changed all seven characters to the ones you require, you shall have to press the Acceleration Button to confirm the new name you are entering; once you have done so, the text "GAME OVER" shall appear on the screen and the game shall go back into attract mode.
