Controls[edit]

Jail Break control panel.jpg
  • Joystick: Use the 8-way joystick to direct Officer Aki through each of the game's five stages in the respective 2.5-dimensional direction it is pushed.
  • Firing Button: Use this button to make Officer Aki fire shots at the prisoners from his currently-selected weapon; for the bazooka, he can only have one shot on screen at a time (which may be crucial if he misses a trash truck heading directly towards him and he cannot get out of its way in time).
  • Weapon Selection Button: Use this button to advance to Officer Aki's next available weapon; if he only has the pistol pushing it will have no effect.
  • 1 or 2 Player Buttons: Push these buttons to begin a 1 or 2 player game.

Characters[edit]

Officer Aki[edit]

JB Officer Aki.png

This lone police officer, whose name is given in the end credits, is the protagonist for this game; as mentioned on the previous page, he is on a mission to free a prison warden taken hostage, while killing the escaped prisoners and rescuing innocent bystanders. He initially only starts out with a pistol, but by rescuing innocent bystanders can gain a bazooka and a tear gas gun (which are the only way to destroy the prisoners' commandeered trash trucks as they come towards him) - however, if he accidentally kills an innocent, or dies himself (after one hit), he shall be back to just the pistol again. He will also receive an extra life at 30000 points and every 70000 points thereafter by default.

Prisoners[edit]

There are three types of prisoners in the game: Cats (Nagasawa) (who wear blue-and-white-striped trousers), Machineguns (Tasaka) (who wear red-and-white-striped trousers, carry machineguns like their name suggests, and use them to fire shots at Officer Aki), and Molotov Cocktails (N. Kengo) (who wear gray-and-white-striped trousers, carry Molotov Cocktails like their name suggests, and throw them at Officer Aki); their names are all, again, given in the end credits, and they are all worth 200 points when killed normally (however, groups of them shall occasionally drive commandeered trash trucks towards Officer Aki, which are only vulnerable to a shot from the bazooka or tear gas gun, and worth 400 points when destroyed). Machineguns will also occasionally fire at Officer Aki from the windows of buildings - and in this case, they're only vulnerable to a shot from the tear gas gun and are worth 5000 points when killed (some of them will also transform into topless women, making this the first Konami game to not be 100% suitable for all audiences). If Officer Aki takes too long over a stage, Molotov Cocktails shall drive motorcycles (which cannot be destroyed) towards Officer Aki while throwing their bottles at him; the only way to survive their onslaught is if it happens just before killing the final regular prisoners at the end of the stage.

Innocents[edit]

There are also three types of innocents in the game: Children (Nakagawa) (who will say Aah! Aah! from the VLM-5030 in its female voice despite being boys, and are worth 2000 points when saved), Citizens (Hatano) (who will say Let the hostages go! from the VLM-5030 in its male voice, and are worth 500 points when saved), and Housewives (Azusa) (who shall say Hey, I'm over here! from the VLM-5030 in its female voice, and are worth 1000 points when saved); their names are all, once again, given in the end credits. By saving one innocent Officer Aki will gain a bazooka, but by saving two of them in succession he shall gain a tear gas gun as well - however, if he accidentally kills one, they will say Oh, no! from the VLM-5030, and he will be back to just the pistol again. Because the bazooka and tear gas gun are the only way to kill some enemies, gaining (and keeping) them is important throughout.
