A) Alitania Castle[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Alitania Castle.png
Floor 1
Floor 2

You begin the game in front of the castle. Before you begin to explore the land, enter the castle and talk to all of the inhabitants. On the right wing of the first floor, you will learn that Gladrif has been missing for a month, and that the Silver Bell can lift curses, but it must be blessed first. By heading up through the main entrance and climbing the stairs, you will meet the king, who will present you with the Fire Rod. Next door, you will learn that the princess has an illness which can only be cured with water from the magic well, and the Selina fruit.

The left wing of the castle is much more populated. You will learn quite a bit about Arlem Castle, like how it is surrounded by magic, taken over by monsters, and some people are still trapped in its basement. The archbishop below the stairs instructs you to retrieve the Silver Bell from the treasury in the north. After climbing the stairs, the man closest to you sells potions. Once you reach level 6, you should return here to stock up on Heal Potions. You will learn about such items as the Angel Statue, the Read Helmet, and the Amulet. You will also learn detail about Len, like that it has caves, and seems to be the source of the monsters. Your exploration of the second floor will be cut short by the locked door to Gladrif's room.

Once you have the Fire Rod, you are ready to embark on the journey north to the town of Puton. Walk north two screens, and then west two screens to find the town. Try to avoid combat with enemies on your way.

B) Puton Town[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Puton Town.png

Enter the town to discover what services it can provide.

  • a: You will find a man who will fully recover your health at the cost of 10 Gold per Level of experience. This gets rather expensive as you get stronger, but it's a good deal until you reach level 6, when it becomes more efficient to spend your money on Heal Potions. A women here also informs you that the weapon dealer's daughter prefers necklaces over rings.
  • b: This is the weapon shop. You will meet the shop keep's daughter Marina here. The shop has the following items for sale: Long Sword - 300, Scale Mail - 150, Plate Mail - 320, Soldier Shield - 50. Purchase the shield right away, and save up for the Long Sword and Plate Mail (there's little reason to buy the Scale Mail).
  • c: In this tavern you will learn about a village that was cursed and sank into a lake, and how someone found a ring in the forest and gave it to Marina.

Once you have fully explored the town, head outside, and prepare for a long period of combat while you attempt to save up enough to purchase the Long Sword and Plate Mail. Try to ensure that all combat takes place in the woods or in the hills to give yourself a tactical advantage with the terrain. The Zombies and Skeletons will be easier to defeat than the Goblins and Orcs. Keep your Fire Rod handy at all times, and use it to weaken enemies from a distance before you rush in to attack. Whenever you begin to run low on health, return immediately to town and get healed. When you exit, be sure to Quick Save the game in case you are defeated. Once you have saved up enough to purchase the Long Sword and Plate Mail, you should be significantly more powerful and capable of taking on the enemies in the southern Taimeer region.

Taimeer region[edit]

C) Akura Town[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Akura Town.png

Once you are equipped with the Long Sword and Plate Mail, you are ready to venture south. The previous enemies will be replaced with Insects, Shakers, Ghouls and Gaks. Remember to fight them in forests and hills until you are confident that you can easily defeat them. You must travel to the southern most point, just west of Arumaada Peninsula. There you will find Akura Town.

  • a: A man sells potions here, just like the one on the second floor of Alitania Castle. It is convenient to stock up here if you are low. The lady in the rooms suggests you speak to a sage from the town that sunk into the lake.
  • b: You will learn quit a bit in this home. Magic powder can restore wells, a man lost the Ring of Truth in a forest, and rods do not work on all enemies.
  • c: A lady will ask you for a donation to help the old and poor. Say yes, and you will donate a single gold piece. You will get the Magic Powder in return for your generosity.

With the Magic Powder in hand, you are ready to head north to the Town of Genis. Nestled in to the mountains, you can only approach it from the south-west.

D) Genis Town[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Genis Town.png

Enter Genis Town when you arrive, and you will see one cottage and a well. In the cottage, two occupants will educate you about the town. One will tell you that the well in town is magical, but it has dried up. The other will inform you that the Selina tree can be found along the coast to the west of Genis. Head back outside and examine the well. If you use the Magic Powder on it, you will restore the well, and be rewarded with some Magic Water for you to take back with you. On the advice of the cottage occupant, it is time to find the Selina tree along the west coast.

E) Selina Tree[edit]

Indeed, if you travel due west from the Town of Genis, you will stumble upon a lone tree along the west coast of the Taimeer region. Simply stand on the tree and "Check" it, and you will collect a Selina Fruit. With this fruit, and the Magic Water, you now have the ability to revive the princess from her illness.

Return to Alitania Castle, and speak to the old man who stands before the Princess. He will administer the cure. Then leave the room and speak to the King. He will reward your good deed with 200 gold. Before you leave the castle, return to the Princess. Your way to her will be unobstructed, so you can speak with her. When you talk to her, she will give you the White Idol, an extremely valuable object that has the power to heal you at the cost of 5 magic points.

Parutia & Eriban Peninsulas[edit]

F) North Treasury[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi North Treasury.png

Reaching the North Treasury will take a bit of a journey. From Alitania Castle, you will have to travel east until you reach water, and then travel south until you are south of the mountain range and in the region known as Risuania. From there, you must continue traveling east until you reach Sagi Lake. Then start traveling north. Parutia and Eriban Peninsulas are separated by an inlet. Parutia, home to the North Treasury, is on the left. Walk up to the building and enter it. You will meet two guards who will recognize you and invite you to take the contents of the chest behind the doors. Check it and you will find the Silver Bell.

While the Silver Bell can lift curses, it must first be blessed. So you must return with the bell to Alitania Castle, and meet with the bishop on the first floor of the left wing. He will bless it an unlock it's full power.

G) Kyefeel Town[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Kyefeel Town.png

Kyefeel Town is on the right peninsula of Eriban, along the east coast. The truth is, there isn't a lot of useful information in this town, and you could conceivably beat the game without ever visiting.

  • a: A lady here will inform you that the Angel Statue was stolen by monsters.
  • b: You will learn that the Talisman is in Alitania Castle, and that there's two types of rods.
  • c: The lady in the corner will tell you that you need a Talisman to pass through a magical wall. The man will heal your wounds for 10 gold per level of experience you have. At this point, it's cheaper to rely on Heal Potions.

Sagi Lake[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Sagi Lake.png

H) Nilarug Town[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Niralug Town.png

Once the Silver Bell has been blessed by the bishop, it is ready to break a curse. You've heard some rumors about a town which was cursed and sank under water. The terrain around Lake Sagi only allows you approach the northern shore. Walk up to the water and use the Silver Bell, and the cursed town of Nilarug will rise up and be restored. Life inside apparently picks up right where it left off, so enter the town.

  • a: This is the sage Sarnin which the lady in the Town of Akura recommended you speak with. He will tell you that a lair of evil is found in the center of Len surrounded by lava, and only the Sword of Kalin will be effective there. The break the seal on the sword, you need 5 idols and a spell book.
  • b: In here, you will meet a lost student of Gladrif's. He happens to possess the Gladrif's Key which unlocks the study in Alitania Castle.
  • c: There is a weapon shop here. You can buy the following: Buster Sword - 600, Broad Sword - 1000, Silver Mail - 800, Gods Shield - 1000.

After you speak with Sarnin, and obtain Gladrif's Key, it is a good idea to stick around this region and attempt to earn 2800 pieces of gold to buy the best equipment that Nilarug has to offer. Ignore the Buster Sword since the Broad Sword is better.

When you are finished, you may be inclined to hurry back to Alitania Castle, but instead, you might wish to attempt a long a dangerous trek that will save you some time in the end. Save your game and prepare to venture far to the west, to the southern peninsula of Talin. On your way there, you should avoid getting into combat situations with any monster you have not yet encountered, as they are likely to be too strong for you to defeat.

Talin Peninsula[edit]

I) Yohan Town[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Yohan Town.png

Once you safely make your way to the southern most peninsula along the west coast, visit the town on the east side of the strip of mountains.

  • a: A gentleman inside has a Necklace for sale for 100 gold.
  • b: Inside, the lower occupant will heal your wounds at the price of 10 gold per level of experience. The man above him reminds you that you can perceive true appearances if you wear the Ring of Truth.
  • c: The house serves as a double shop. The man on the left sells potions while the man on the right sells weapons and armor. From the right side, you can purchase: Buster Sword - 600, Great Sword - 2000, Plate Mail - 320, Heroes Shield - 100.

Your primary goal on your initial visit is to purchase the Necklace and return to Alitania Castle. If you have an extra 100 gold and have not bought the Gods Shield yet, you may wish to consider buying the Heroes Shield. Otherwise, the only other item of interest is the Great Sword, but you'll need to save up a bit before you can purchase that.

Preparation for Aremu Castle[edit]

With Gladrif's Key and the Necklace, you must return to the Ankara Region where you began the game. First, visit Puton Town to the north. Step inside the weapon shop and speak with the shopkeeper's daughter. Give her the Necklace you purchased in Yohan Town, and she will trade it for the ring she got from the other man in town. This ring happens to be the Ring of Truth. Now return to Alitania Castle.

In Alitania Castle, head to the second floor through the stairs to the left, and head to the locked doors which lead to Gladrif's study. Use Gladrif's Key to unlock the door and step inside. A man will tell you that he's Gladrif… and then reveal that he was only joking. He will provide you with the Red Idol. Then examine the treasure chest, and you will discover the Talisman.

Since you have the Ring of Truth, there is a step you can take that will cut down on some needless traveling. In Aremu Castle, you will learn that there is an impostor guard in Alitania Castle. Equip the Ring of Truth and talk to each of the guards. Eventually, you will stumble upon a Demi-Demon in disguise at the foot of the stairs to the King's chamber. Defeat this enemy in a one-on-one fight, and you will collect the Zircon Key as a reward, which you will need inside Aremu castle.

Sudoku Desert[edit]

J) Aremu Castle[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi Aremu Castle.png
Floor 1
Basement

Aremu Castle is located at the north-most point in Sudoku Desert, which is found in the north-east corner of the continent. The journey here features appearances by very strong enemies, and the desert can only be accessed through a southern entrance. The castle will offer you no break from the action. Unlike the outdoors, every room in the dungeon will be pre-populated with four randomly chosen enemies, with the rare but possible event that more will join through an entrance. This can be both a curse and a blessing. It's a curse because only the strongest overworld enemies populate the castle, but the blessing is that you can exit and re-enter a room, and possibly wind up with a more favorable selection of enemies in the room.

Once you enter the castle, you will see entrances to the room above, to the left, to the right, and up some stairs. The entrance to the room to the right can be ignored, as it contains nothing of interest. Head to the left first. At the bottom of the room, you will find a chest which contains the Angel Statue. Possession of this item will increase the rate at which you recover magic. From this room, visit the room above and examine the chest at the top of this room. This chest will contain the Platinum Key, which is needed elsewhere in the castle.

After exploring the left wing of this castle, return to the original room. Naturally, you should exit the castle and visit a town if you run out of Heal Potions. When you are ready to proceed, visit the room above the entrance. Examine the chest at the top of the room. Inside, you will find a button. When asked if you would like to press it, say yes. At this point, you may return to the original room and climb the stairs. The button that you pushed has opened doors which prevented you from reaching the chest on the second floor. With the doors opened, you are free to walk to the chest and examine it. Inside, you will find the Blue Idol.

All that is left for you to explore is the room to the right of the chest with the button inside. Visit this room and you will discover a set of stairs. The stairs lead to the basement level. There are no monsters on this level, but you will need the Platinum key to explore it. Provided you have the Platinum key, head downstairs and unlock the door. From the stairs, you can go left or down. By heading down, you will encounter two trapped soldiers who provide you with information like the fact there there's an impostor in the Alitania Castle, and that Gladrif is not in the dungeon. By taking the left path, you will pass a man who has some information concerning one of the idol's location in Len, and encounter another set of locks doors. These doors require the Zircon key to be unlocked, which can only be obtained by locating and defeating the impostor in the castle. Unlock the doors to gain access to the chest inside, where you will find the Amulet, the magical device which grants you the ability to visit the cave world dimension of Len.

Rabura Region[edit]

K) Southern Treasury[edit]

Kalin no Tsurugi South Treasury.png

With the Amulet and the three Idols in your possession, you are just about finished with the Overworld, but there is still one more task that remains. If you visit the Rabura Region (located directly west of Talin Peninsula) and explore the southern shore, you should chance upon another treasury, like the one where you obtained the Silver Bell. However, the guards inside will insist that you prove your strength before they will hand over the contents of the treasury. There is no one item that will provide them with such proof, you simply need to reach Level 30 before they will oblige and give you the treasure. Inside the chest, you will find another item necessary for the summoning of the Sword of Kalin: the Spell Book.

Once you collect this, there is nothing left to be accomplished in the overworld. It would be a good idea to ensure that you have the Silver Mail and God Shield from Nilarug Town, and the Great Sword from Yohan Town as quickly as possible. By the time you reach level 30, you shouldn't have much difficulty collecting the necessary gold to purchase those items.
