Player[edit]

Keith Courage / Wataru Ikusabe[edit]

During the overworld portions of the game, you are in control of Keith Courage (or Wataru Ikusabe) while he wears his normal attire. In this mode, you move across the world, encountering various houses where many of your allies live. You have a short sword which you can use to defend yourself and destroy the small menaces which attack you as you travel to the right. Some enemies destroyed in the overworld leave gold coins behind which you must collect in order to earn enough money to buy services and weapons. You have some health which is indicated by the row of hearts near the upper left corner of the screen. If you lose all of your hearts by taking too much damage, or if you fall through the bottom of the screen, the game will end. If you choose to continue, you will begin at the start of the last zone you died in, but with half as much gold.

Nova Suit / Ryūjinmaru[edit]

Once you reach the far right side of the overworld, you will find a shrine. If you press up while standing in front of it, you will summon a rainbow that transports you to the underworld. Along the way, the Nova Suit (or Ryūjinmaru) appears and forms around you. You will traverse the underworld in this magical armor. The armor moves much faster than you can without it. As a result it can jump much farther too. It shares the same life force as your character, and you will die if you lose all of your hearts, or land on a bed of spikes. The armor starts out with a powered blade, but as you progress through the game, you will gain access to longer and stronger weapons for the armor, provided you are able to collect enough money to purchase these weapons. The Nova Suit can also make use of Bolt Bombs. You must purchase the bombs in the overworld, but in the underworld, you can collect five different orbs which alter the behavior of the bolt bombs when fired.

Items[edit]

Item Description
KCiAZ item coins.png Coins are only obtainable in the overworld, and they are the only item that you can obtain by defeating enemies in the overworld. Coins are the currency of the land, and they can be used to buy three things: More bolt bombs, a healing treatment from Nurse Nancy, and more powerful weapons for the Nova Suit. Any time you die and continue, you return to the game with half as much money as you had prior to dying.
KCiAZ item heart.png Hearts only appear from defeated enemies in the underworld. A majority of the time, they will restore one full heart to your health meter. However, on occasion, they will add an extra heart to your health meter and refill your entire health. You can only obtain one such heart for every zone you have visited, and you can have no more than eight hearts in your health meter.
KCiAZ item bolt bomb 1.png Like Hearts, Bolt Bomb items can only be obtained in the underworld. Collecting these does not add to your Bolt Bomb ammunition; that can only be purchase in the overworld. However, it does alter the effect of your Bolt Bomb, as well as how much ammunition they require. As the first Bolt Bomb, the fires a basic shot forward and uses up 1 unit of ammunition.
KCiAZ item bolt bomb 2.png The next Bolt Bomb item may not appear to enhance the effect of Bolt Bombs over the first item, but it does double the rate at which they may be fired, allowing you to shoot them at your opponent more rapidly. However, each shot will cost you 2 units of ammunition.
KCiAZ item bolt bomb 3.png The third Bolt Bomb item enhances your shots by adding a second projectile to the first. While the first continues to travel horizontally, the second one fires off at an upward angle compared to the first. Firing the pair of these bombs will cost 3 units of ammunition.
KCiAZ item bolt bomb 4.png The fourth Bolt Bomb item is a pretty good deal: for the cost of 4 units of ammunition, the Nove Suit will actually fire six shots; four in each diagonal and two more horizontally, one traveling ahead and the other behind. However, for the cost of these shots, you'll want to fire sparingly. You can't get anymore ammunition until you reach the next overworld stage.
KCiAZ item bolt bomb 5.png The fifth Bolt Bomb item naturally requires the most ammunition; 5 units for each shot fired. What you get for those 5 units is a set of five shots which travel forward in an arc. This is fairly guaranteed to strike whatever opponent is standing before you, but you won't be able to shoot too many of them before you run out of ammo.
