Numerous items found in the game can support Pit along the way. Some require currency to buy. Some are found exclusively in dungeons.
- Hearts: Hearts are the currency of Angel Land and are obtained by defeating monsters and breaking jars in Treasure Rooms. They come in small, half, and large sizes, worth 1, 5, and 10 hearts respectively.
- Hammers: Hammers can be purchased at the Shop for 20 hearts and are used to break statues and some walls. Breaking statues reveals a small glass of the Water of Life, restoring two hits of damage to Pit. Statues in Fortresses may contain monsters, a map, a torch, or a pencil. Breaking walls may reveals secret passages or hidden doors.
- Water of Life: Comes in small glasses (which appear after breaking most statues or, rarely, instead of a heart after killing a monster), large glasses (which can be purchased from the shop or lying about the level), and bottles. A Water Bottle is consumed when Pit's life runs out and restores a single block of health.
- Keys: Can be used to open a door that's already locked.
- Angel Key: Found hidden in a block near the end of each level and must be exposed with a Hammer. Taking this key unlocks every door in the level.
- Water Barrel: Permits Pit to carry up to eight bottles of water instead of the default 1.
- Credit Card: Can be used once to purchase something from the Black Market on credit. Any hearts gained afterwards will go to pay off the debt.
- Map: Found by breaking a particular statue in each Fortress. Provides you with the locations of the Fortress and is lost when the Fortress is beaten.
- Torch: Found by breaking a particular status in each Fortress or purchased from a shop in a Fortress. Shows the current map location in the Fortress and is lost when the Fortress is beaten.
- Pencil: Found by breaking a particular statue in each Fortress or purchased from a shop in a Fortress. Marks off visited rooms on the map and is lost when the Fortress is beaten.
