Before this event, you'll be treated to a short cutscene featuring Johnny, which explains that you will have to alternate pressing the first and third buttons.
Once your (and the second player's, or a randomly-generated CPU-controlled if there is only one or three players) Numan appear upon the screen, they will show off for the crowd as two arrows with the text "1P" and "2P" (or "CPU") on them fly into view from the right side of the screen; the platforms they are standing on will then move them forward towards the start line, as the camera pans to the right and they take their positions. Once the text "Ready... Go!" appears on the screen, you will have to alternate pressing the first and third buttons, to make your Numan start running to the right - and once they have passed through the tunnel they shall speed up. Once they have passed the finish line, they shall again show off for the crowd if your time was less than 12.80; if your time was less than 9.20, the text "WORLD RECORD" will appear on the screen, and you will have thirty seconds to enter your initials by using the first and third buttons to select the letters, then pressing the second button to confirm your choices. If there are only one or two players, the game shall proceed to the results screen (if you came first you shall receive six points but if you came second you shall only receive three) and go on to the second day - but if there are three or four players, the game shall proceed to a second Maximum Speed event (and results screen) before doing so.
