After the opening cutscene, there is a short section in Mario's house as Toad. Just walk over to the bathroom, which is on the left side of the house. Toad while enter, then quickly run out and run into a dresser. Mario walks out and wakes Toad up, who tells him that Princess Peach is in danger. The Mario Bros. quickly leave for Princess Peach's castle.
At the castle, Bowser challenges the Mario Bros. to a battle. In this tutorial battle, you can only control Mario.

- Dodge: Jump just before Bowser breathes fire
The only point of this battle is to teach you about action commands. After two attacks, Toad will teach you about offensive action commands. After four attacks, Toad will teach you about defensive action commands. It's impossible to lose this battle.
After the battle, Toad tells the Mario Bros. about how Princess Peach's voice was stolen and how her new voice causes explosions. The Mario Bros. and Bowser flee as Princess Peach causes a massive explosion in the castle.
