Since Super Mario Kart, the Mario Kart series has gone through special additions and changes. If there's a motivation, it's to unlock as many parts, courses and modes to have a maximum experience. Here's the lowdown to this game for both Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch:

  • Coin collection: This is key to speed. You get to a max of 10 coins. It will help in not just Grand Prix, but Versus and Time Trial as well.
  • Weapons rebalanced: Unlike earlier Mario Kart games like DS and Wii, you can only hold one weapon at a time. So need to worry about an avalanche of items coming your way! But if you're playing Switch, be on your toes with two items on the ready!
  • Classic and New Courses: In this HD era, the courses has a balance between simplicity and complexity while retaining the core of racing.
  • Download Content: If you keep up to date, there's additional courses, parts, racers and surprises! But with the Switch, no need to download it all for a maximum experience.
  • Switch version: Try out a few more racers, parts and the revamped Battle Mode, replacing race courses to battle courses to a new high! Also, if you're new, Smart Steering and Auto Acceleration will help improve your kart skills. Especially in the staggering 200cc Cup!
