HUD[edit]

The black bar at the bottom shows X's HP (the number of hits he can take) and extra lives. X starts with 16 HP. During the game, he can collect up to eight Hearts; each one of these items permanently increases X's HP by 2 units, for a total of 16 more HP.

When X meets a Boss, the HP of the latter is shown on the right part of the bar.

When X selects a special weapon, the weapon energy bar is shown below X's health bar.

Taking damage[edit]

Whenever X is hit by an enemy, he loses one or more HP. If X's HP drop to zero, he loses one life. There are items that replenish lost HP or reduce damage suffered.

Enemies will occasionally drop consumable items that X can collect. These will either heal his HP, weapon's energy, or give him an extra life.

Whenever X defeats a Maverick (a boss), he earns the weapon of the enemy. Each weapon is especially effective against another one of the eight main bosses. Each boss in the final part of the game is weak against a special weapon, too.
