Neuromancer is a game based on exploration and trial and error. You begin with very little covered in the manual and you must explore, buy things, test and experiment them yourself. There is a load of information, texts and backstory you can read on BBSes or hear in dialogue and it is important to be able to filter out useful information out of these. When talking with other characters you are supposed to guess what topics the character recognises and type them yourself. Your actions are also limited as your time online drains credits from your money chip.

The game is also non-linear and open ended, meaning that there is no correct order of things to do, and many of them is optional. All information in the game is non-random and constant in each playthrough. That means that you have to pass through some actions only the first time you play it; having already noted a code or password, you can save yourself precious time or credits.
