Normal Strategy[edit]

Hit the ? Block for a Super Mushroom or Fire Flower, then slide down the hill. Pick up a barrel and throw it at the Spike enemy. Continue onwards, staying above ground level to dodge the Spiked Balls. Hit another ? Block for an Ice Flower and use it to freeze the Spike nearby. Continue, jumping to dodge the Spiked Balls. Go through the quicksand, jumping to stay alive, as an easy way to dodge the attacks of the next Spike. Run ahead, jumping over the Spinies on the hill, then slide down the other side of that hill. The next section is an elevator with many Koopas. Freeze them as necessary, but avoid turning them into shells, as these will often just hurt you. Right after the elevator, hit the midway flag, then go backwards into the large pit of quicksand. Allow yourself to be taken to the bottom, which leads to the first bonus room. Continue on, using barrels to defeat any Spikes in your way. When you reach the section with four rows of Spikes, wait for the moment when none of them have any ammunition to use, and quickly climb to the top. On the next moving platform, go backwards into a Warp Pipe leading to the third bonus room. Jump into the first breakable block to create a Beanstalk leading to the fourth bonus room. Continue on the main path, being very careful if you are Mini. In the next set of platforms, ground pound the second barrel and enter the Warp Pipe to the fifth bonus room. Keep dodging Spikes, then use the moving platform at the end to reach the top of the flagpole.

Bonus Rooms[edit]

The pit leading to the first bonus room
The first bonus room

The first bonus room is accessible from the giant pit of quicksand right before the midway flag. In it is a row of blocks and a P-Switch. Hit the P-Switch, then fall down , collecting as many coins as you can. You can use wall-jumps to increase the number you get, but keep in mind the fact that they will all disappear after a certain amount of time. Exit to the second bonus room through the Warp Pipe on the right at the bottom.

The second bonus room

The second bonus room is accessible from the Warp Pipe at the bottom of the first bonus room. In it are two Spikes, a switch that creates moving platforms, and the first Star Coin. Use the switch to get to the Star Coin as quickly as possible, being very careful to jump over the Spiked Balls. If you have an Ice Flower, you can use it to freeze a Spike and use its body to get the Star Coin. Upon leaving, you are returned slightly farther along in the main path.

The third bonus room is accessible from a Warp Pipe to the left of the first set of moving platforms. In it are a lot of coins and a ? Block with a Mini Mushroom. Using the Mini Mushroom, you can collect all of the coins easily. You will need the Mini Mushroom to get the third Star Coin, and this is the only one in the level. You exit the way you entered.

The Beanstalk leading to the fourth bonus room
The fourth bonus room

The fourth bonus room is accessible from a Beanstalk in a breakable block near the entrance to the third bonus room. In it are many coins, a switch that makes a moving platform, a POW Block and the second Star Coin. By riding on the moving platform, you will be taken to the POW Block. A little farther along, use it to drop the Star Coin onto the platform you're on. Upon exiting, you are returned right before the Warp Pipe to the fifth bonus room.

The fifth bonus room is accessible from a Mini Warp Pipe behind two barrels. In it are two ? Blocks, a P-Switch, and the third Star Coin. By running across the water and wall-jumping, you can reach the Star Coin. The path you should take is outlined by the blue coins created by the P-Switch. Upon exiting, you are returned slightly farther along the main path.

Star Coin Strategy[edit]

The first Star Coin
  • Star Coin #1: Go to the first bonus room, and from there, the second bonus room. Use the moving platform to reach the Star Coin, but watch out for the Spiked Balls. If you have an Ice Flower, you can use it to freeze the Spikes attacking you.
The second Star Coin
  • Star Coin #2: Go to the fourth bonus room by using a Beanstalk in a Brick Block. Ride the moving platform until you reach a POW Block. Pick up the POW Block and use it when you are directly under the Star Coin.
The third Star Coin
  • Star Coin #3: Acquire a Mini Mushroom in the third bonus room, then make your way to the fifth bonus room. Run across the surface of the water, then use a wall jump to reach the ledge it is on.
