Area 1[edit]

Phelios Stage 1 Area 1.png

Welcome to the game. Once Apollo has appeared on the screen, Pegasus will start propelling him forward as the area theme starts to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151, and two Item Flies come flying down towards him on the left side of the screen; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword at these, to kill them, they will leave two "S" powerups behind and announce their names in Japanese from the C140. Once you've collected them, six Babito will come flying down towards you on the left side of the screen - and once you have fired a charged shot from your sword at these, to kill them, six more Babito will come flying down towards you (on that right side of the screen). Once you fire a charged shot from your sword at these, to kill them, six Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the right side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword at these, to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the left side of the screen while firing projectiles at you. Once you have fired a charged shot from your sword at them to kill them, five Type A Dokuro-Hei will run into view from the right side of the screen, and throw their axes up at you (which can be blocked for 80 extra points apiece) - and once you've fired a charged shot from your sword at these to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you on the left side of the screen while firing projectiles at you. A third Item Fly will then come flying down towards you on the left side of the screen; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword at him to kill him, he will leave an "O" powerup behind and announce its name in Japanese from the C140. Once you have collected it, a beam will appear adjacent to Apollo's sword (it is similar to the satellites in Konami's Gradius series), and six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the right side of the screen while firing projectiles at you - and once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the beam adjacent to it at them to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the left side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you. Once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the beam adjacent to it at them to kill them, five more Type A Dokuro-Hei will run into view from the left side of the screen, and throw their axes up at you; once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the beam adjacent to it at these to kill them, five more Type A Dokuro-Hei will run into view from the right side of the screen, and throw their axes up at you. Once you have fired off a charged shot from your sword and the beam adjacent to it at them to kill them six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you on the left side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you - and once you have fired off a charged shot from your sword and the beam adjacent to it to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging towards you on the right side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you. Once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the beam adjacent to it at them, to kill them, a fourth Item Fly will come flying down towards you on the left side of the screen; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and that beam adjacent to it at him to kill him, he will leave another "O" powerup behind and announce its name in Japanese from the C140. Once you collect this, a second beam will appear adjacent to Apollo's sword as a Kuro Kishi flies down into view at the top of the screen, then fires a shot from his sword at you - and once you fire a charged shot from your own sword and the two beams adjacent to it at him to kill him another Kuro Kishi will fly down into view from the top of the screen and fire a shot from his sword at you. Once you've fired a charged shot from your own sword and the two beams adjacent to it at him to kill him, a third Kuro Kishi will fly down into view from the top of the screen and fire a shot from his sword at you; once you fire a charged shot from your own sword and the two beams adjacent to it at this last Kuro Kishi to kill him the three-script Japanese text Dirosu no oka ni ha Radōn ga sumitsuite iru wa. Radōn no kyūsho ha atama yo. Ganbatte, Aporō! (ディロスの丘にはラドーンが住み着いているわ. ラドーンの急所は頭よ. がんばって、 アポロー!) appears down at the bottom of the screen as Apollo descends down to the second area of the stage below him. The song you are hearing from the Yamaha YM-2151 will also change once he has landed.

Area 2[edit]

Once Apollo has landed Pegasus will continue to propel him forward as two more Item Flies come flying down towards him on the left side of the screen; once you fire off a charged shot from your sword and the two beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, they will leave a third "S" and a "B" powerup behind and announce their names in Japanese from the C140. Once you've collected them, a Radon will come flying towards you from the left side of the screen, while spitting fireballs at you - his head is his only vulnerable point, and once you have fired off enough beams from your sword at it to kill him, two Papiyon will come flying towards you, from that right side of the screen. Once you've fired a beam from your sword at both of these, to kill them, a second Radon will come flying towards you from that left side of the screen, while spitting fireballs at you; once you have fired enough beams from your sword at his head to kill him a third Radon will come flying towards you (from the right side of the screen) while spitting fireballs at you. Once you've fired enough beams from your sword at his head to kill him, three more Papiyon will come flying towards you, from that right side of that screen - and once you've fired a beam from your sword at each of these, to kill them, two more Papiyon will come flying towards you from the left side of the screen. Once you have fired a beam from your sword at both of them to kill them, a fourth Radon will come flying towards you from the right side of the screen while spitting fireballs at you; once you've fired enough beams from your sword at his head, to kill him, two more Item Flies will come flying down towards you on that left side of the screen. Once you have fired a beam from your sword at both of them to kill them, they will leave a fourth "S" and a third "O" powerup behind and announce their names in Japanese from the C140 - and once you have collected these, a third beam will appear adjacent to Apollo's sword as two more Papiyon come flying towards him from the right side of the screen. Once you've fired a beam from your sword at both of them to kill them, a fifth Radon will come flying towards you from the left side of the screen, while spitting fireballs at you; once you fire enough beams from your sword at his head to kill him, two more Papiyon will come flying towards you from the right side of the screen. Once you fire off a beam from your sword at both of these to kill them, three more Papiyon will come flying towards you from the left side of the screen - and once you've fired a beam from your sword at each of them to kill them, a sixth Radon will come flying towards you from that right side of the screen, while spitting fireballs at you. Once you have fired enough beams from your sword at his head to kill him, two more Papiyon will come flying towards you, from the left side of the screen; once you've fired a beam from your sword at both of them to kill them a seventh Radon will come flying towards you from the right side of the screen while spitting fireballs at you. Once you have fired off enough beams from your sword at his head to kill him two more Papiyon will come flying towards you from the right side of the screen - and once you've fired off a beam from your sword at both of these to kill them, an eighth Radon will come flying towards you from the left side of the screen while spitting fireballs at you. Once you have fired enough beams from your sword at his head, to kill him, two more Papiyon will come flying towards you from the left side of the screen - and once you've fired a beam from your sword at both of them to kill them, a ninth Radon will come flying towards you from the right side of the screen, while spitting fireballs at you. Once you've fired enough beams from your sword at his head to kill him, the three-script Japanese text Rokku Wingu wo koetara Medyūsa no shinden ga aru wa! Shinden wo mamoru Desu Sukeru ni kiwotsukete! Aporō! (ロック・ウィングをこえたらメデューサの神殿があるわ! 神殿をまもるデス・スケルに気をつけて! アポロー!) will appear at the bottom of the screen as Apollo ascends to the third area of the stage above him; the song you are hearing from the Yamaha YM-2151 will also change again once he has reached the top, and this area is not quite so long.

Area 3[edit]

Once Apollo has reached the top, Pegasus will continue to propel him forward again, as he descends towards the four Death Skulls, in the snake-infested ground below him; as he is doing so, the Death Skulls will fire their eyeballs up into the air at him and instantly growing replacement ones. Although it is possible to fire shots from your sword down at the Death Skulls' eyeballs to destroy them for extra points, it is advisable to keep moving around the screen in a clockwise direction, in order to avoid being overwhelmed by them - and once you have fired enough shots from your sword down at the Death Skulls' core on the ground to destroy them, Pegasus will continue to propel Apollo forward for a third time as he arrives at the boss temple of Medusa, and that three-script text Medyūsa no shinden (メデューサの神殿) appears at the bottom of the screen. The song you had been hearing from the Yamaha YM-2151 will also fade out once he has descended to and entered the temple to indicate that you have proceeded to the fourth and final area of the stage; it is also worth noting that if you cannot fire enough shots down at the Death Skulls' core to destroy them quickly enough it will simply disappear back into the ground as the Death Skulls cease firing their eyeballs at Apollo of their own accord.

Area 4[edit]

Once Apollo has reappeared inside the temple and its theme starts to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 three more Item Flies will come flying down towards him on that left side of the screen; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them, to kill them, they will leave two "S" and a fourth "O" powerup behind and announce their names in Japanese from the C140. Once you have collected them (the "O" one will have no effect at this point), four Yahei will walk onto the left and right sides of the bridge in front of you, and fire their arrows at you - and once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to knock them off the bridge, the three-script Japanese text Yatta wa! Aporō. Medyūsa no noroi wo hodoite, watashi wo moto no sugata ni modoshite... (やったわ! アポロー. メデューサの呪いを解いて、私をもとの姿に戻して...) will appear at the bottom of the screen as you come to the slumbering Medusa, guarded by her eight Shugo-Hei. Once you have fired a charged shot from both your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at each of them, to kill them, the "boss" theme will start to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 as Medusa wakes up; her head will then fly into the air, and start firing laser beams from its eyes at Apollo. Once you fire enough charged shots from your sword and all three beams adjacent to it at the head to defeat her, it will explode, and the three-script Japanese text of Aporō ha, Medyūsa wo taoshita. (アポローは、メデューサを倒した.) will appear at the bottom of the screen as her body crumbles - and Apollo will then proceed onward up to the enchanted mirror at the back of the temple as Artemis's theme begins to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151. Once it has faded in, Artemis will speak the three-script Japanese text of Aporō, watashi ha Dyupon no shinden ni iru wa. Hayaku tasuke ni kite! (アポロー、 私はデュポンの神殿にいるわ. 早く助けに来て!), to her twin lover from the C140 as it appears at the bottom of the screen; once it fades back out again, the game will segue into the second stage, which has three areas. It is also worth noting that if Apollo flies into the head of Medusa in this area, the impact will kill him instantly - regardless of how many life-hearts he has.

Note: If Apollo is too close to the head of Medusa when it explodes, he shall lose a life-heart if he gets caught in the blast; if it was his last one, the blast shall kill him, but the game will still proceed to the enchanted mirror at the back of the temple as if he was still alive, then resurrect him at the start of the second stage (unless the life that he lost was his last one, in which case it will proceed to the continue screen after the enchanted mirror has faded out). As in Splatterhouse, if you wish to continue playing after losing your last life, you shall have to select "YES" within ten seconds of inserting another coin.
