Area 1[edit]

Phelios Stage 2 Area 1.png

Once the enchanted mirror has faded out, and Pegasus has started to propel Apollo forward again, three Item Flies will come down flying towards him (on the left side of the screen); once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, they'll leave two "S" and an "O" powerup behind and announce their names in Japanese from the C140. Once you have collected them, you will come to eight Taiho, spitting green crystals at you from their positions on the walls on both sides of the screen - and once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and all three beams adjacent to it at each of them to kill them, four Magicians will materialize in the centre of the screen, and summon their knives to fly at you. Once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, two Yahei will walk onto the bridge in the centre of the screen and fire their arrows at you; once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to knock them off the bridge, two groups of four Babito will come flying down towards you from the top of the screen. Once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at each of these to kill them, two more Magicians will appear in the centre of the screen and summon their knives to fly at you - and once you have fired a charged shot from your sword (and the three beams adjacent to it) at these to kill them, four Doragon-Hei will come running down towards you from the top of the screen while firing orange balls at you. Once you fire a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, four more Yahei will walk onto the bridge on that left side of the screen and fire their arrows at you; once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at each of these to knock them off the bridge, two more Magicians will appear in the centre of the screen, and summon their knives to fly at you. Once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at these to kill them, four more Doragon-Hei will come running down towards you from the top of that screen, while firing orange balls at you - and once you've fired off a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, four more Yahei will walk onto the bridge on the screen's right side and fire their arrows at you. Once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at each of these, to knock them off the bridge, four more Doragon-Hei will come running down towards you from the top of the screen while firing orange balls at you; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword (and the three beams adjacent to it) at them to kill them, two more Magicians will appear in the centre of the screen, then summon their knives to fly at you. Once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, four more Doragon-Hei will come running down towards you (from the top of the screen) while firing orange balls at you - and once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at these to kill them, four more Doragon-Hei will run down towards you from the top of the screen, while firing orange balls at you. Once you've fired a shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at these to kill them, four more Yahei will walk onto that bridge on the left side of the screen and fire their arrows at you; once you fire off a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at each of them to knock them off the bridge, four more Magicians will appear in the centre of the screen and summon up their knives to fly at you. Once you fire a charged shot from your sword (and the three beams adjacent to it) at these to kill them, a fourth Item Fly will fly down towards you on the left side of the screen - and once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at him to kill him, he will leave a third "S" powerup behind and announce its name in Japanese from the C140. Once you have collected it, six Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the left side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you; once you've fired off a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at these to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the right side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you. Once you have fired off a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from the left side of the screen while firing projectiles at you - and once you fire a charged shot from your sword and all three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, six more Gauru will come zigzagging down towards you from that right side of the screen, while firing projectiles at you. Once you fire a charged shot from your sword (and the three beams adjacent to it) at these to kill them, the background will begin to revolve anticlockwise around Apollo as ten Vases appear on either side of him and an infinite amount of Utsuboto come flying out of them towards him; as with the eyeballs of the Death Skulls in the first stage, you'll have the chance to kill the Utsuboto for extra points but you must again keep moving around the screen in a clockwise direction in order to avoid getting overwhelmed by them. Once you fire a charged shot from your sword and all three beams adjacent to it at all ten of the Vases to kill them, the stained-glass window in the centre of the screen will shatter and the three-script text Chika no dōkutsu ni tsūjiru iriguchi yo. Hayaku kite... (地下の洞窟に通じる入り口よ. 早くきて...) will appear at the bottom of the screen as Apollo descends through the hole that the shattered window has left behind to the second area of this stage beneath him - and the song you were hearing from the Yamaha YM-2151 will also change once he has landed.

Area 2[edit]

Once Apollo has landed, Pegasus will continue flying forward, as three more Item Flies come flying down towards him on that left side of the screen; once you have fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at these to kill them, they will leave two more "S" and an "A" powerup behind, and announce their names in Japanese from the C140. Once you've collected them, you will come up to three Isogin Chaku that are spitting green balls at you from their positions on the rocks on both sides of the screen - and once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of them to kill them, three more Item Flies will fly down towards you on the left side of the screen. Once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, they will leave two more "S" powerups and another "A" powerup behind, and announce their names in Japanese from the C140; once you've collected them, two more groups of three Babito will come flying down towards you from the top of the screen; once you have fired off enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, you will come to two Yoka spitting pink balls at you from their positions on two more rocks on both sides of that screen, and two more Isogin Chaku that are spitting green balls at you from their positions on a fifth rock in the centre of the screen - and once you fire enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, you'll come to two Enormous Mukade, that are crawling down two more rocks on both sides of the screen (while firing projectiles at you) and two more Isogin Chaku spitting green balls at you from their positions on an eighth rock in the centre of the screen. Once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of them to kill them, you will come to five more Isogin Chaku that are spitting green balls at you from their positions on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen; once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, you will come to a third Yoka spitting pink balls at you from the top of the rock on that left side of the screen. Once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it, you will come to two Hyudora that are spitting red balls at you from their positions on the left side of the rock on the left side of the screen and the right side of the rock at the top of the screen - and like the Radon from the first stage, you will notice that their heads are their only vulnerable points. Once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at both of these to kill them, you will come to three more Isogin Chaku, that are spitting green balls at you from their positions on the underside of the top of the rock on the left side of the screen; once you fire enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these, to kill them, three more Item Flies will come flying down towards you, on the left side of the screen. Once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, they will leave two more "S" and another "O" powerup behind, and announce their names in Japanese from the C140 - and once you have collected them, you will come to a fourth Yoka that is spitting pink balls at you from the top of the rock on that right side of the screen. Once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it, a "Renga" block in the centre of the screen will explode and four more Babito will come flying out of it towards you; once you have fired off enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them you'll come to a sixteenth Isogin Chaku which is spitting green balls at you from its position on the underside of the top of the rock on the left side of the screen. Once you fire enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it another "Renga" block in the centre of the screen will explode and four more Babito will come flying out of it towards you - and once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of them to kill them you'll come to a seventeenth Isogin Chaku which is spitting green balls at you from its position on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen. Once you fire enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it, a third "Renga" block on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen will explode and four more Babito will come flying out of it towards you; once you have fired off enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, a fourth "Renga" block on a ninth rock in the centre of the screen will explode, and four more Babito will come flying out of it towards you. Once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of these to kill them, you will come to an eighteenth Isogin Chaku that is spitting green balls at you from its position upon the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen - and once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it two more "Renga" blocks on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen will explode and eight more Babito will come flying out of them towards you. Once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at them to kill them you will come to a nineteenth Isogin Chaku that is spitting green balls at you from its position on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen; once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it two more "Renga" blocks on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen (the last ones) will explode and eight more Babito will come flying out of them towards you. Once you have fired enough boomerangs from your sword at each of them to kill them, you will come to a twentieth Isogin Chaku which is spitting green balls at you from its position on the underside of the top of the rock on the right side of the screen - and once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at it to kill it, two more Item Flies will come flying down towards you on the left side of the screen. Once you've fired enough boomerangs from your sword at both of them to kill them, they will leave two more "S" powerups behind, and announce their names in Japanese from the C140; once you have collected them, eighteen Topo will emerge from the mist and fly down towards you. Once you fire off enough boomerangs from your sword at each of them to kill them, fourteen more Topo will come flying down towards you (from the top of the screen) - and once you fire enough boomerangs from your sword at each of them to kill them, the three-script Japanese text Guraiai no shinden (グライアイの神殿) will appear at the bottom of the screen as Apollo descends down to and enters the temple of the Graeae (which forms the basis for the third and final area of the stage, and the song you were hearing from the Yamaha YM-2151 will also fade out at this point). It is also worth noting that the eight indestructible "Renga" blocks (written in Kanji as 煉瓦), look like this: Phelios Renga Block.gif

Area 3[edit]

Once Apollo has reappeared inside the temple and its theme starts to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 three more Item Flies will come flying towards him on the left side of the screen; once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at these to kill them, they'll leave two more "S" and a third "O" powerup behind, and announce their names in Japanese from the C140. Once you have collected them, seven Ropers will emerge from the ground (in the centre of the screen) and fire yellow shots from their eyes at you - and once you've fired a charged shot from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at them to kill them, the three-script Japanese text Rōba no kubi ni kiwotsukete! Guraiai no kyūsho ha aoi suishō yo. (老婆の首に気をつけて! グライアイの急所は青い水晶よ.) will appear at the bottom of the screen. The "boss" theme will then start to be heard from the Yamaha YM-2151 for a second time as you come to the three Graeae who are firing green and red shots from their hands at you; once you've fired a charged shot from both your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at each of their hands to destroy them, a blue crystal will appear at the top of the screen, as the heads of the Graeae fly off and start spitting white crystals from their mouths at you. As with the Utsuboto that came flying out of the Vases towards you in the first area of the stage, you will have the opportunity to destroy the heads for extra points, as they will instantly regenerate from the aforementioned blue crystal at the top of the screen - and once you have fired enough charged shots from your sword and the three beams adjacent to it at that aforementioned blue crystal to destroy it, it will explode, and that three-script Japanese text Aporō ha, Guraiai wo taoshita. (アポローは、 グライアイを倒した.) will appear at the bottom of the screen as the bodies of the Graeae crumble. Apollo will then proceed to the enchanted mirror at the back of the temple as Typhon's theme starts to be heard out from the Yamaha YM-2151; once it fades in, Typhon will speak the three-script Japanese text of Aporō-me, watashi ni hamukaeba dō naru ka, misete yaru! (アポローめ、 私に刃向かえばどうなるか、 見せてやる!) to Apollo from the C140, then breathe a flame onto his side of the glass. The image will then cut to Artemis, who is still chained to the wall of Typhon's temple, and is now screaming from the C140 (but the Hiragana text for the scream, Yāā! やああああ!, will not appear) - and once it fades out again, the game will segue into the third stage, which is also comprised of three areas. It is also worth noting that if Apollo flies into the blue crystal during this stage, the impact will kill him instantly, regardless of how many life-hearts he has.

Note: If Apollo is too close to the Graeae's crystal when it explodes, he shall lose a life-heart if he gets caught in the blast; if it was his last one, the blast shall kill him, but the game will still proceed to the enchanted mirror at the back of the temple as if he was still alive, then resurrect him at the start of the third stage (unless the life that he lost was his last one, in which case it will again proceed to the continue screen after that enchanted mirror fades out). As in Splatterhouse, if you wish to continue playing after losing your last life you shall have to select "YES" within ten seconds of inserting another coin.
