Welcome to Hoenn[edit]

You've just moved to your new home in Littleroot Town. There aren't many people here, but they'd really like to know you better. So you'll have to present yourself by choosing if you're a boy or a girl, and your name. You already have access to your PokeNav, with a map of Hoenn and the DexNav, but you'll get other applications later in the game.

Meet the Neighbors[edit]

After finishing the opening cutscene, your mom will ask you to set the clock in your room. Head upstairs and interact with it; it will automatically set the time to match your 3DS's internal clock. Time of day affects several events such as Pokémon evolution and Mirage Spots, so don't fiddle around with your 3DS clock. Next to your clock is a notebook with a few tips on how to open the menu and save your game.

Once that's done, go back downstairs. Your father, the Gym Leader of Petalburg City (you'll meet and even battle him later in the game) is giving an interview on television, but you're too late to catch it. Your mom will suggest you meet your neighbors. In Littleroot, the person of note is Professor Birch, a Pokémon researcher. He and his family live in the house next door to you. Drop on by and meet Mrs. Birch, then go upstairs to greet Brendan or May.

To The Rescue[edit]

Professor Birch himself isn't in town right now, he's out studying wild Pokémon on Route 101, the route directly above Littleroot. The game will not let you go into the route until you have spoken to Brendan or May. Once this is done, simply go straight out.

Professor Birch is in a bit of a fix, having been cornered by a wild Poochyena. He's dropped his bag and he begs you to use a Pokémon. Interact with the bag, and the game will offer you a choice of three starters: Treecko (Grass-type), Torchic (Fire-type), and Mudkip (Water-type). Once you've made your selection, battle and defeat the wild Poochyena. Going back to the lab, a very grateful Professor Birch will offer you the starter you picked, and give you the chance to nickname it. He'll then suggest you to meet his child, who is also out in the field, in Route 103 beyond Oldale Town. He'll explain to you briefly what it means to be a Trainer.

It's time to go!

Starter Pokémon details
#252 Treecko #255 Torchic #258 Mudkip
Pokemon 252Treecko.png
Treecko is a Grass-type, with high Speed and Special Attack. Although its defenses aren't the best, it is still considerably tougher than Torchic's evolutionary line. Treecko has a type advantage against the first Gym and resists the Electric attacks of the third. Its final evolution, Sceptile, can Mega-Evolve, becoming extremely fast and strong while gaining the coveted Dragon-type and the ability Lightningrod, rendering it immune to Electric attacks.
Pokemon 255Torchic.png
Torchic is Fire-type, but its evolutions will gain the Fighting-type. Slow and fragile, it packs a pretty heavy punch with high offensive stats. Torchic is initially disadvantaged against the first Gym, but in the long run Fire hits many types for super-effective damage and his extra Fighting-type will nullify his Rock weakness upon evolving. Its final evolution, Blaziken, can Mega Evolve, upon which it gains a massive boost to its offenses and the Speed Boost ability, which raises its Speed at the end of each turn.
Pokemon 258Mudkip.png
Mudkip is the easiest Pokemon to start with. Although initially Water-type, it evolves into Water/Ground, which has only one weakness and is not weak to any of the Gyms in Hoenn, in addition to being super effective against the first, third, and fourth Gyms. It is quite slow and bulky, with decent Attack. Its final evolution, Swampert, can Mega Evolve, upon which it becomes much stronger and tougher, gaining the Swift Swim ability which doubles its Speed in rain.
