You can now go further[edit]

Upon returning to Oldale Town, you'll find that the scientist has discovered that the footprints he was sketching so earnestly turned out to be his own footprints. He sheepishly stands aside, and you can now enter Route 102.

Route 102 contains your first ordinary Trainers. If you're not sure if you're ready to take them on, there's a patch of grass to the left of the pond that contains the Route's Pokémon where you can train and expand your team. The highest level Pokémon of the Trainers is 5, with most being 4, so your starter should easily be able to take care of them, but it's never too early to start building a team; consistently relying on one Pokémon is a bad habit to get into. Only one Trainer, the first Youngster in the route, cannot be avoided, but it really is best to fight every Trainer you meet (unless your Pokémon are unfit for battle, in which case it's better to return to Oldale and recover) to pick up high EXP and money, and to fill the Pokédex. If you're trying to avoid Trainers, keep in mind that running will attract their attention.

Fantastic Berries[edit]

At the top of the route, next to Youngster Allen, are two Berry trees: an Oran tree and a Pecha tree. Berries are items that can be held and used by Pokémon in battle or otherwise used to make Pokéblocks for improving your Pokémon's Contest stats. Oran Berries in particular are useful at this stage of the game because your Pokémon will use them to restore 10 HP if its health falls below 50%. You can replant some if you like, but it's better to wait until you get the Wailmer Pail, as that will improve your yield.

And finaly a little pick-up[edit]

To the south of the Lass, in the final patch of grass, there is a Potion. Even if it's not the case on this route, there are often invisible objects on the ground. You can't see them, but as you do with visible objects, you stand aside and push A to take it.

After that, simply walk out towards Petalburg City.

New Pokémon[edit]

#270 Lotad #280 Ralts
Pokemon 270Lotad.png
Only available in Alpha Sapphire, Lotad isn't much originally, but stick with him and he can be a good early-game choice for anyone who didn't select Mudkip or Treecko. Lotad is a Special Attacker with decent Special Defense, and evolves very early at level 14 into Lombre. His downside is that he's quite slow, his level-up movepool is shallow, and he requires a Water Stone to evolve to his third evolution--meaning he also can't learn any new attacks via levelling up in his third stage. He and his evolutions have the abilities Swift Swim (doubles Speed in rain) or Rain Dish (heals self slightly in rain at the end of each turn).

Definitely catch this Pokémon if you can. Ralts has the coveted Psychic/Fairy typing, which is very hard to obtain in Hoenn, and has excellent Special Attack and Speed. Depending on its gender, Ralts's final evolution can be either Gardevoir (if it's female, or if a male reaches level 30 without using a Dawn Stone), a very powerful Special Attacker with good Special Defense, or Gallade (if male and a Dawn Stone is used), a Psychic/Fighting bulky physical attacker. Both these final forms can Mega Evolve, which enhances their offenses and Speed. Ralts can have Trace, which changes to your opponent's ability upon being switched in, or Synchronize, which means that if Ralts is burned, paralysed, or poisoned, the opponent will also gain the status effect. Gallade has Steadfast, which raises his Speed if he flinches; Mega Gallade, has Inner Focus, which means he can't flinch at all; Mega Gardevoir has Pixiliate, which turns all Normal-type attacking moves into Fairy-type and gives them a 30% boost. Ralts only knows Growl upon being caught; that, and its slow leveling rate, can make it initially difficult to raise.

#273 Seedot #283 Surskit
Pokemon 273Seedot.png
Exclusive to Omega Ruby, Seedot is a defensive Grass-type that becomes much more frail, faster and physically offensive after evolving into the Grass/Dark Nuzleaf. Like Lotad, Seedot evolves early and requires a Stone to reach its final stage. Seedot is difficult to raise as it learns no attacking moves other than the situational Bide until level 14. Its abilities are Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed in sunlight, or Early Bird, which awakens it from sleep earlier.
Pokemon 283Surskit.png
Surskit is rare, but it's not really worth the effort of searching for. While it does have an interesting typing in Water/Bug, it doesn't utilize either of those typings well and loses its Water-type upon evolving to Masquerian, a Bug/Flying. It also has rather poor stats, being designed as a very slow and frail Special Attacker. Its ability is Swift Swim, which changes to Intimidate upon evolving.
