The game opens with a cutscene, first with Lillie escaping Aether Paradise with a bag containing Cosmog. After this, it then cuts to what is apparently three months later, to the player character's house.

Meowth will wake you up, then you can go downstairs and Professor Kukui (the region's professor) will arrive at your house, saying that it's time to get a starter Pokemon from the Island Kahuna, Hala, who lives in Iki Town.

You don't have a hometown in Sun and Moon; your house is located on Route 1. Route 1 is also divided into three sections: one section to Iki Town, one to Hau'oli City, and one south to Ten Carat Hill.

Going there, it's a short walk.

Iki Town[edit]

This town is built in a traditional Alolan style. It is stated to be the home of a shrine for the guardian Pokémon of Melemele Island: Tapu Koko.

Once you arrive in Iki Town, Kukui announces that he can't find Hala, and tells you to find him. He will be up on the Mahalo Trail, to the north of town.

Mahalo Trail[edit]

Halfway up the trail, you'll notice a cut-scene, involving Lillie, who is going to become a major character later in the game. Lillie tries to run out onto the bridge to save her Cosmog, nicknamed Nebby, but decides to ask you to do it instead. You saved "Nebby" from the Spearow, but suddenly the bridge collapses. Don't fear, as Tapu Koko dives down from the sky and saves you just in time, setting you back down on dry land. You head back to Iki Town, and Lillie gives you a Sparkling Stone that Nebby found.

Choosing a starter[edit]

Kukui notes that you didn't find Hala, but instead found Lillie, who he reveals is his assistant. Hala appears behind, telling you that it's time to choose a starter. It could be Rowlet, Litten, or Popplio.

#722 Rowlet Rowlet is a good choice for a beginning player. It is only weak against one of the seven trials. It's the first starter Pokemon since Bulbasaur to begin with two typings: it's Grass/Flying now and when it evolves into Dartrix, but evolving into Decidueye, it becomes Grass/Ghost. Its movepool is solid, but sadly limited to primarily STAB moves such as Razor Leaf and Brave Bird.
#725 Litten The fire-cat Litten can help you greatly if you choose. It evolves into Torracat and then into Incineroar, becoming Fire/Dark on its final evolution. As for its moves, it is very physically-oriented, and can even learn Outrage at higher levels. If you wish for a medium level of difficulty, Litten is worth a try.
#728 Popplio Popplio is somewhat harder to use for the main game than the other two starters, being weak against two of the seven trials, but those who do use it will be rewarded with a specially-oriented Water attacker, learning some Fairy moves like Disarming Voice. And indeed - it becomes Water/Fairy type on its final evolution, evolving into Brionne, and subsequently into Primarina.

After making your choice, Kukui will give you two gifts: a Trainer Passport and a Pokédex. He tells you that the Pokedex is incomplete, and will need a very special Pokemon to enter inside it so that it will function properly.

Now, it's time for your first Pokemon battle, against Hala's grandson and your new rival, Hau. He will have chosen the starter weak to yours: If Rowlet, he will have chosen Popplio. If Litten, Rowlet, and if Popplio, he will have chosen Litten.

  • Rival Hau
    • Starter 1st Stage (Lv. 5)
    • Reward: Pokebuck.png 100

This battle should be very easy, as you will already have a STAB move (Leafage, Ember, or Water Gun) on your starter.

After the battle, Hala asks to look at your Sparkling Stone, then tells you to participate at the festival to be held the next day in Iki Town. Now, it's time to head back to your house.
