There are 228 cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Base Set's Electrode and Fossil's Ditto are not in this game. Special cards in this game include the Imakuni? card, the promotional Meowth card, and the two special Card Pop! cards: Venusaur and Mew. There are also other promotional and game-exclusive cards listed here.

Card types[edit]

There are 3 major types of cards: Pokémon, Energy, and Trainers.

Pokémon cards are collected into 7 Energy types: Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, and Colorless. As you may notice if you're familiar with Pokémon Red and Blue, some types are missing among the Energy types. Grass, Poison, and Bug types in the main Pokemon series are collected under Grass Energy. All the Water and Ice types in the main series are gathered under Water energy. Electric-types use Lightning Energy. Psychic and Ghost types are together under Psychic Energy (which you may find interesting in context of the bug found in Red & Blue. Rock, Ground, and Fighting types all use Fighting Energy. And lastly, Normal, Flying, and Dragon types in the main series all use Colorless energy.

A Pokémon must be active at all times in a duel, and up to five more can rest on the Bench, waiting to come out. Most cards have a "retreat cost" - an amount of energy which must be discarded for the card to allow you to swap a card on the Bench for the active card. A Deck can only contain 4 of each species of monster (in other words, Meowth Lv. 13 & Meowth Lv. 15 both count as Meowth cards).

Energy cards are used to allow Pokémon to perform their attacks! Unlike Land cards from Magic: The Gathering (another Wizards of the Coast card game), these cards are attached directly to a single monster and used to attack, rather than being used for the entire field and used to bring monsters to the field. Each Energy type has a "Basic Energy" card, and there is one "special energy", the Double Colorless. A deck can contain as many copies of any Basic Energy as the player chooses, but can only contain four copies of Double Colorless Energy.

Trainer cards allow a player to activate various unique effects, like searching in your Deck, drawing extra cards, and healing your Pokémon. The two "unusual" Trainer cards are the Clefairy Doll and the Mysterious Fossil. These two Trainers get played like Pokemon, but they cannot attack and cannot have Energy attached at all. The Clefairy Doll is a stalling tactic, since when it gets KO'ed, the opponent does not collect a Prize. The Mysterious Fossil also does not allow the opponent to collect a Prize when KO'ed, but can be evolved into any of the Fossil Pokemon - Aerodactyl, Omanyte, and Kabuto.

Rarity[edit]

Cards have 4 rarities:

  • Common (C). These Pokemon are often found in Booster Packs. They include many Underused and Unevolved Pokemon.
  • Uncommon (U). These Pokemon are found in Booster Packs often, but not as often as Common Cards.
  • Rare (R). These Pokemon are rarely found in Booster Packs, hence their name.
  • Rare (Holofoil) (H). These Pokemon are almost never found in Booster Packs.
