Route 3, also known as Ouvert Way, is the final route before Santalune City. There are still some trainers in your way that you have to battle, as well as a few new Pokémon.

The group splits[edit]

After exiting Santalune Forest, you will meet up with the rest of your friends. As they separate to pursue their separate goals, Calum/Serena will give you a copy of Adventure Rules, a book with 10 basic tips for beginning trainers. With that, he/she will run off to challenge the Santalune Gym, which is also where you should be heading next.

#206 Dunsparce #298 Azurill
Among the many Pokémon in the game, Dunsparce is perhaps one of the least remarkable. Its stats are nothing to write home about, with a moderately high HP. While it can learn useful moves like Rollout, Roost and Double-Edge, as well as a large variety of TMs, a lot of Pokémon can typically do its job better. Its early access to the Defense Curl and Rollout combination is one of the only reasons to use it, as it is tough enough that you can do serious damage with Rollout. There are better Pokémon that gets this combination if you're serious about using this tactic, so Dunsparce will likely find itself abandoned in Someone's PC indefinitely. Azurill is the first Fairy-type you encounter in the game, an entirely new type introduced in this generation of Pokémon. It evolves into Marill when it has high friendship, turning into a unique Water/Fairy type, then into Azumarill at level 18. Azurill's entire evolutionary line is primarily defensive, but can be a tough offensive threat if you can catch one with Huge Power, which actually doubles their physical attack. While Azurill and its evolutions get plenty of Water-type moves, the only Fairy-type move Azumarill learns is Play Rough, at around level 50.
#399 Bidoof #412 Burmy
Bidoof's appearance is goofy, and its prowess in battle isn't any better than it looks. Its stats are poor and its movepool is unimpressive, but it does learn 4 of the 5 HMs in the game, so you might want to keep it around as an HM slave, though Zigzagoon would be a better candidate for that due to its Pickup. Bidoof evolves into Bibarel at level 15, and their abilities are actually quite interesting. Bidoof with Simple get double the effects of any stat changes, both positive and negative. For example, Defense Curl will raise its Defense twice in one turn, while Growl used by an opposing Pokémon will lower its Attack twice. Bidoof can also have the Unaware ability, which lets them ignore any stat changes on an opposing Pokémon, such as a Metapod that used Harden 4 times. Burmy is a rather interesting Bug-type Pokémon, due to its ability to change forms depending on where it is last used in battle. Its default appearance is the Plant Cloak, the cloak they get after a battle on grassland. It will get the Sand Cloak after a battle in rocky or sandy areas, or the Trash Cloak if it is last used in a building, such as in a gym. Another unique feature of Burmy is it can evolves into two different Pokémon depending on its gender. It does so at level 20, when it starts to learn new moves other than its mediocre set of Protect, Tackle, Bug Bite and Hidden Power. Male Burmy evolve into Mothim, a generic Bug/Flying type similar to Butterfree and Vivillon, but with higher attack stats than both. Female Burmy evolve into Wormadam, where their current cloaks become permanent and gains a gameplay effect. Plant Cloak Wormadam are Bug/Grass types, have the highest Special Defense and the highest Special Attack. Sandy Cloak Wormadam are Bug/Ground types and have the highest physical Defense and physical Attack. Trash Cloak Wormadam are Bug/Steel types and have a balanced stat spread. They are also capable of learning different moves based on their cloaks. Unfortunately, despite the many features of Mothim and Wormadam, their usefulness in battle is still pretty limited, so they certainly wouldn't be a permanent member of your team.
