Puzzle 051[edit]

Description: One of the three color pictures--A, B, or C--is the same picture as the black-and-white one displayed on the far left. Can you find which one? The only difference is that the picture on the far left has had its content flipped left to right and its colors inverted and changed to black-and-white.
- Hint 1: Comparing A, B, or C with the picture on the far left is a lot of work, and it can be hard to find differences. So why not forget about the black-and-white picture for a moment and just focus on finding the differences between pictures A, B and C?
- Hint 2: Don't forget to look at those lines in the background.
- Hint 3: The eyebrows on each cat are worth a look too!

Description: There is a fellow with very particular rules about when he wears his best hat.
- When it's sunny, he always wears his hat.
- When it's rainy, he doesn't wear his hat.
- When it's cloudy, he doesn't wear his hat unless it's been cloudy for two days in a row, in which case he wears his hat on the second of these days.
Below is a chart of when this man wore his hat over the course of one week. Use the panels to fill in the weather for each day, keeping in mind that it doesn't rain on cloudy days. (Note that the days of the week were bumped one day forward in the European version, so the first day of the puzzle in Pandora's Box is a Monday instead of a Sunday. The hints are taken from the US version.)
- Hint 1: Start by placing a rainy-day tile on each day where our friend didn't wear a hat.
- Hint 2: Once you put down the rainy-day tiles as described by Hint One, you may notice that there are no more spaces left for your cloudy tile. You could put it down on one of the days with a hat if that day was the second day in a row of cloudy weather, but no two days of the week shown appear to have been cloudy...
- Hint 3: If the week before the one shown here had a cloudy Saturday, this fellow could wear his hat on Sunday, couldn't he?

Description: Below is a wheel of male and female portraits. Select a portrait and, counting that portrait as one, move six portraits clockwise or counterclockwise. Then cross out the last of these portraits. Repeat this pattern, starting from the next available portrait and moving in the same direction. If you start at just the right portrait, you can remove all the women on the wheel, leaving only six portraits of men behind. Circle this portrait. Remember, you can move clockwise or counterclockwise.
- Hint 1: The first portrait you choose should be of a man.
- Hint 2: Move counterclockwise to find your answer.
- Hint 3: The first portrait you should remove is the girl positioned at five o'clock.

Description: You have a pristine white flag that you want to color into three sections as shown below. You have three paints. No two adjacent sections of the flag can be the same color, each section can only be one color, and you can't change the number or size of these sections. If you aren't allowed to mix paint, how many distinct flag designs are possible?
- Hint 1: You have three paints you can use on the flag, but that doesn't mean those are the only colors at your disposal.
- Hint 2: Maybe you've noticed that the white color of the flag's fabric is another color you can use in making your designs.
- Hint 3: Adding white to the three paints you have gives you four colors you can use to make flag designs. If the leftmost third of your flag is white, you will have a total of nine distinct designs.
Puzzle 055[edit]
- Name: Sammy's Necklace

Description: Sammy has eight chains with seven links each. He wants to connect all those chains to make a totally awesome necklace that's a single loop. The jeweler says he can open and close a single link for $2. As shown below, Sammy could open an end of each of the eight chains to make one long necklace that's a single loop. However, that would cost $16, and the truth is there's a cheaper way to get the same results. Using the cheapest method possible, how much will it cost to make Sammy's necklace?
- Hint 1: The number of links in each small chain is a crucial clue that will help you solve the puzzle.
- Hint 2: You haven't been opening only the links on the ends of each small chain, have you?
- Hint 3: Try taking one small chain, popping open each of its seven links, and using those individual open links to connect the other small chains together. Is the answer clearer now?

Description: In order to pass through this door, Luke and Layton must arrange the symbols according to the following rules:
- The star must be next to the moon.
- The X must be second from the top.
- The circle must be somewhere above the diamond.
- The moon must be located two places below the diamond.
Give it a shot!
- Hint 1: "The X must be second from the top." As you know exactly where the X should go, start by placing this symbol. Once it's filled in, move on to the other conditions.
- Hint 2: "The moon must be located two places below the diamond." If the moon is two places below the diamond, then the diamond must be in one of the top three spots. X already occupies the second slot, so the diamond is in either the first or third space from the top, right?
- Hint 3: "The circle must be somewhere above the diamond." If you combine the above statement with the information from Hint Two, it's clear that the only place you can put the diamond is the third spot from the top. Once you've placed the diamond, you should now have enough symbols in place to solve the rest of the puzzle easily.

Description: Ah, there's nothing like fresh-cut roses to boost your spirits. Can you help Sammy freshen up the whole car with their fragrance? Tap a square with your stylus to place a rose. The fragrance of each rose reaches two spaces in all directions but can't penetrate walls. If the fragrance of two or more roses overlaps, the resulting smell will be overpowering, so make sure to keep your roses spaced out. To remove an existing rose, just tap on it again.
- Hint 1: Here's a handy hint. Start your work from the corners of the car.
- Hint 2: Place a rose in the lower-right corner of the car, then think about where everything else needs to go.
- Hint 3: To solve this puzzle, you need to put roses in fives different spots.
Puzzle 058[edit]
- Name: In the Tunnel

Description: Two trains pass in the darkness of the tunnel. Move them around so that each locomotive ends up on the opposing track while still maintaining the same order of its cars. There's one trick, though: the number 2 cars for both trains must remain in their original tracks.
- Hint 1: To start, try to get all the cars going to the top track into their designated positions before worrying about the ones headed to the bottom track.
- Hint 2: Tuck away the red car in the side track that sits between the top and bottom tracks. Then bring down all of the cars on the top track. Move that red car up into its designated spot on the top track.
- Hint 3: You can use the trick highlighted in Hint Two to move any car from the bottom track to the top track. Then it's just a matter of bringing that car out of the side track and up into its designated position.
Puzzle 059[edit]
- Name: A Ticket to Where?

Description: In front of you sits the ticket that Layton and Luke found with Dr. Schrader. At firstglance, the ticket appears to have no destination written on it. But when you look at it just the right way, the ticket discloses its destination: the town of Folsense. The key to spotting the destination is the number that has been cut out of the ticket. What number used to be there? Use the ticket in the instruction booklet to puzzle this one out!
- Hint 1: To find the answer, you have to fold the ticket in a particular way.
- Hint 2: First, fold the entire ticket in half lengthwise. Next, fold the ticket lengthwise along the middle of each row of numbers. Fold it just so, and the top half of the top row of numbers will connect to the bottom half of the bottom row of numbers, revealing a string of letters.
- Hint 3: The words "FOR FOLSENSE" are written on this ticket. What number must belong in the cut-out portion in order to form an E when the ticket is folded?
Puzzle 060[edit]
- Name: Plaza Puzzle

Description: "So there's this big, old statue in the middle of this plaza. When you take away the area occupied by the statue, the plaza looks kinds doughnutlike in shape. What you gotta do is divide this donut plaza into two identically shaped parts using only one line. "Oh, and before you get any big ideas, the dotted lines shown below won't cut it 'cause they're actually two lines." Draw your answer on the Touch Screen.
- Hint 1: In the example illustration, the plaza has been divided by two lines, which makes the answer invalid. The fact that you need to use a single line to answer the problem is key. Since you can only use one line, you know you won't be solving this one by drawing lines through the middle of the plaza, right?
- Hint 2: Even if you avoid drawing your line through the center of the plaza, no single straight line will divide the plaza into two pieces that are the same shape. By the way, did you notice the goal here isn't to make two pieces thatare the same size but merely the same shape? Keep that in mind.
- Hint 3: If you're still having trouble, you should know that the single line you need to draw is a circle. The only remaining question is where to place it so that the two pieces of the plaza have the same shape and are directly proportional to one another.
Puzzle 061[edit]
- Name: Where's the Hotel
- Trigger: Inspect any of the four buildings

Description: In front of the town train station are four buildings standing in a row. One of these four is supposedly the local hotel, though it lacks a sign. Even so, if you study the area carefully, you should be able to tell which of the buildings is the hotel. Can you figure out which of these four buildings is the hotel.
- Hint 1: Just study the four buildings carefully, and the answer will present itself.
- Hint 2: Say, upon second glance, one of these buildings has the word "hotel" written on it. Do you see it?
- Hint 3: A close inspection of the scene reveals that one building has letters of the alphabet hidden in its doorways and windowpanes.
Puzzle 062[edit]
- Name: Smell the Roses Again

Description: Nothing smells quite as sweet as fresh-cut roses. Can you help freshen up the whole room with their fragrance? Tap a square with your stylus to place a rose. - Hint 1: Start by placing a rose in the lower-left corner of the room, then just take it from there.
- Hint 2: If you know where one rose goes, placing the rest shouldn't be prove to be too much of a challenge. Place your other roses so that their scent doesn't overlap with the rose in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
- Hint 3: In total, you need to place seven roses to finish this puzzle.

Description: Cards labeled 1 through 6 are arranged in order as shown below. Rearrange them so that they satisfy the following conditions.
- The sum of the numbers on the top row must be one less than the sum of the numbers on the bottom row.
- The two cards in the right column must add up to five.
- The 5 card must be to the immediate left of the 4 card.
- The 1 card must be placed in the left column.
- Hint 1: The sum of all cards is 21. Knowing this, you can deduce that the top row of three cards in your solution should add up to 10, while the bottom row must add up to 11.
- Hint 2: The 1 card belongs in the top row.
- Hint 3: Put the 4 card in the middle column of cards.
Puzzle 064[edit]
- Name: Stones in a Vase
- Trigger: Talk to Dawson

Description: "This vase holds 101 stones, each identical in size and feel. There are 50 black stones and 51 white stones. Now, put on this blindfold, reach in, and pull out as many stones as you like. When you're finished, if you've removed an equal number of black and white stones, you'll receive a number of gold pieces equal to the number of stones you pulled out." How many stones should you remove to give yourself the best chance of removing equal numbers of stones while getting the most money possible?
- Hint 1: Since the stones are of the same size and feel, there is absolutely no way to tell them apart while removing them.
- Hint 2: The best shot you'll have of pocketing those coins is just around 50 percent. There's no way of ensuring you'll win the coins.
- Hint 3: Let's think about this for a moment. Whether you pull out two stones or 100 stones, your chances of winning the gold are the same: just about 50 percent.
Puzzle 065[edit]
- Name: The Ancient Map
- Trigger: Serve the Cayenne Twilight to Dawson

Description: An ancient map depicts the possible spots of a vast fortune, as well as directions: "Incribe the numbers 1 through 6 in the map's blank spaces so that each set of numbers in a straight line has the same sum. You can use each number only once, and the sum must be the largest one possible. Then go to the spot marked 1, for that is where you'll find your treasure." The number 4 has been filled in for you. Circle the area where the treasure is hidden.
- Hint 1: The number 4 is already in place, so your task is to decide where the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 go. Remember, your goal is to make every set of numbers in a straight line add up to the same total. Pay special attention to the two lines that use the number 4, as they are crucial to solving the puzzle.
- Hint 2: Focus your attention on the spot at far right of the page and see how it forms a line with the number 4. Were you to insert a smaller number, like 1 or 2, your total for the whole line couldn't be any larger than 6. With a total like that, there'd be no place for you to put the number 6, making the puzzle unsolvable. So what should go in the far-right blank?
- Hint 3: When arranged properly, each line of numbers can add up to either 9 or 10. The puzzle asked you to use the largest sum possible, so you know you should be shooting to make each line add up to 10.
Puzzle 066[edit]
- Name: The Locked Box
- Trigger: Find all the differences in Photo 006

Description: The box shown below is fitted with a lock consisting of two dials. You can't turn the blue dial, but when you turn the red dial, the blue dial moves an equal amount. To see the relationship between the two dials, you turn the red one from its original position, as shown below. In order to open the lock, you must turn the blue dial to 3, 6, 4, and finally 1, in that order. Since you can't turn the blue dial directly, what numbers must you turn the red dial to in order to produce the desired numbers on the blue dial?
- Hint 1: When the red dial reads 0, the blue dial reads 5. When the red dial reads 3, the blue dial reads 2. As stated in the puzzle, the distance the blue dial moves is equal to the distance the red dial moves. When the red dial moves from 0 to 3, the blue dial moves from 5 to 2. Read that last sentence again and think about what it says about the dials' relationship.
- Hint 2: Did you catch on to what Hint One was trying to tell you? The red and blue dials turn the exact same amount, but as you may have noticed, as the numbers on the other dial turn the other way.
- Hint 3: When you turn the red dial, the blue dial moves the same amount, only in the opposite direction. So all you need to do is construct a quick table to show you how values on the red dial correspond to other values on the blue dial. Try writing up the table using the Memo function, if you like.
Puzzle 067[edit]
- Name: Sammy's Work Week (US) / Sammy's Working Week (UK)

Description: "So let's say today is my day off. if yesterday wasn't also a day off, then I'm off again tomorrow. If, on the other hand, I was off yesterday, then tomorrow I'll have to work. "Say I worked today. Bummer. If I didn't work two days before today, I'll have to head to work tomorrow. But if I did work two days ago, I'm off tomorrow. Yeow!" Assuming a 365-day year, and ignoring weekends and holidays, use what Sammy said to figure how many days he works in a year.
- Hint 1: Sammy's work-and-rest schedule repeats itself every five days.
- Hint 2: Sammy's schedule is a cycle that consists of three days on the job, followed by two days of downtime.
- Hint 3: Sammy works 3/5ths of the days in the year. With that fact under your belt, you should be able to find the answer using a simple calculation.

Description: Taking Felix's request for "that" hat at face value, you must now find another hat to hand over from the pattern shown below. The hat you're looking for will be the same shape and size as the one shown above the pattern, but it might not be facing the same direction. Use the stylus to outline your answer.
- Hint 1: The shape is identical to the example hat, so while you may find that some shapes resemble the hat in question, outlining one of these won't count as a valid solution. Study the points where the lines of several shapes cross each other to find the exact match to the example hat.
- Hint 2: The hat hidden in the pattern has been turned on its side.
- Hint 3: Focus your search on the lower-left section of the picture.
Puzzle 069[edit]
- Name: Copying the Menu
- Trigger: Talk to Felix
- Location: Eastern Side Street
- Chapter: 5

Description: The menu you see here has been folded into thirds with print on both sides, meaning in total there are six pages to it. The boss needs lots of copies, but your copy machine can copy a maximum of two adjacent menu pages at once. To save time, you want to complete a copy of the menu in as few passes through the machine as possible. What is the fewest number of passes through the machine you need to make to create a full duplicate of the menu?
- Hint 1: Fold creatively and copy two pages at a time.
- Hint 2: Just because a crease makes the menu sit one way doesn't mean you can't fold along the line in the other direction.
- Hint 3: As you fold and copy, make sure you arrange each two-page spread in a way that ensures you don't copy any one page twice.
Puzzle 070[edit]
- Name: The Jeweled Necklace (US) / Jewelled Necklaces (UK)

Description: "I have this old necklace, but the thing is, it's not really my taste anymore. So I decided to sell it, but when I was getting it appraised the other day, I realized something weird. "Each stone is worth a different amount, but if I break the necklace in three places, the three gem strands will be worth the same amount as one another. Can you believe it? Here, see if you can figure out where you gotta cut it to make that happen."
- Hint 1: You'll have a tough time if you just dive straight into adding up different strings of gems. There's an order you need to proceed in. Why don't you start by adding up the total value of the necklace?
- Hint 2: If you added the totals correctly, you should've gotten $7,800. You want to divide this total into three sections of equal worth, so each section of the necklace in your solution will need to be worth $2,600.
- Hint 3: No single strand will contain more than one of the three stone worth 1,000 or more dollars. Coincidentally, each of these three stones will form an end for each strand. Now all you need to figure out is which side of each 1,000-plus dollar stone connects to another stone.

- Name: How Old Is She?

Description: A boy and girl are chatting at a local café. Looking up from his coffee, the boy says, "You know, I'm 20 now, but back when I was as old as you are now, you were half my current age. Neat, huh?" As you can see, this boy isn't the most concise of speakers, but using what he's said, how old is the girl he's chatting with?
- Hint 1: Start by figuring out how old the girl was back when the boy was as old as the girl is now. What relationship does the girl's past age have with the boy's current age?
- Hint 2: Maybe you already picked up on this, but if you double the girl's age from back when the boy was the girl's current age, you should get the boy's age of 20.
- Hint 3: Using the facts in Hint Two, you can ascertain that the girl was 10 back when the boy was the girl's current age. Since then, X years have passed, and the boy has become 20, and the girl has become her current age. If you can find the number of years that, when added to 10 and subtracted from 20, yield the same age, you're very close to finding the girl's current age. Now what could X be?
Puzzle 072[edit]
- Name: Scrambled Photos
- Trigger: First time entering the Photo Studio

Description: Four photographs decorate the walls of Joseph's photo studio. Each photo depicts the same area and was taken at a different point in time, and if you look carefully, you can figure out the order in which these pictures were taken. Enter your answers using the letters attached to each picture, starting with the earliest, like so: ABCD.
- Hint 1: Start by scanning all four pictures for differences between them. For example, maybe the buildings are different in one or two of the photos...
- Hint 2: Photo C is the only one where the stairs aren't illuminated, because there's no visible streetlight. Both photos C and D are missing the big, orange building in the background. By contrast, the building and streetlight are visible in photos A and B.
- Hint 3: The door to the photo studio is the same color in all pictures except A. Also, in B, one of the restaurant's windows is broken. However, the window is patched up in A, so A must have been taken after B.
Puzzle 073[edit]
- Name: Can Conundrum
- Trigger: Talk to Niles

Description: A number of identical cans are hanging from a tree. While all the cans here may look empty, one is actually filled with water. See if you can find it. When deducing your answer, ignore the weight of each string and stick.
- Hint 1: Study each can, one at a time, and observe how they're balanced relative to each other.
- Hint 2: Notice how the biggest stick is level even though it's connected to the tree at a point left of the stick's center. This shows that the water must be in one of the four cans hanging from the left side of the big stick.
- Hint 3: We know that the water is in one of the four cans on the left, so finding the can in question should be a breeze. Just look at the position of the four cans on the left relative to the string attaching all four cans to the big stick above. Which can looks heavier than the others?
Puzzle 074[edit]
- Name: PU (US) / Sealing Off The Smell (UK)
- Trigger: Talk to Garland
- Location: Grocery Store
- Chapter: 5

Description: Garlic is a wonderful seasoning when used in moderation, but the smell can be pretty potent. Someone put garlic cloves in this intricate container, and they're really stinking up the room. Use the two corks below to help our friend deal with the smell. Touch an opening to put a cork in it. You can use no more than two corks.
- Hint 1: Use the Memo function to trace which openings in the container lead to the garlic bulbs!
- Hint 2: Hmm? Something seems strange, you say? Why yes, the fact that all three openings in the container connect to the garlic is a bit strange... How to contain the smell, then?
- Hint 3: You don't have enough corks to stop up all three openings in the container. Well, you'll just have to look for another set of openings to seal off from the smell with the two corks.
Puzzle 075[edit]
- Name: Candy For Five (US) / Sweets for Five (UK)
- Trigger: Talk to Marina

Description: You have a box of four different kinds of delectable candy arranged in no particular order. Your job is to divide these treats into five equal portions using your stylus. To do so, you need to make sure each portion contains the exact same number and variety of snacks. Furthermore, all the sweets in a single portion must be connected to each other vertically or horizontally, but not diagonally. Got it? Good. Then get started!
- Hint 1: First count out how many sweets you have. There are five pieces of three types of candy and 10 pieces of a fourth type. You have to put two pieces of this fourth type of candy into each of the five portions.
- Hint 2: Look for sweets that are one per portion; in other words, varieties of candies that number five pieces in all. If you find two of these candies next to each other, you can draw a line through where they will connect, since they can't exist in the same portion. Start by drawing these lines.
- Hint 3: Do you see the three pieces of the same variety of candy in the third row? The leftmost two pieces are part of a single portion. The third of those three pieces and the identical piece of candy directly below it part of a different portion. Now that you know that much, you shouldn't have too much trouble finishing the puzzle.
