Creating a Character

After you create a Runescape account and log in, you will have access to the character customization screen. This allows your to choose your gender, skin tone, hair color and style, and clothing. Guys have the option to have facial hair. The clothing you choose during this process will usually not be seen, because when you equip an item (armour, robes, etc.), it will be covered by said equipped item.

After you choose how your character looks, you can pick a screenname. This name can only be changed every 28 days if you are a member. If you don't plan on becoming a member, take extra care to pick a name you will actually be happy with.

In-game Customization

If you don't like your clothes after a while or just get bored with them, you can pick out new ones free of charge at the clothing shop in Varrock square. Here you can find an even wider variety of styles for tops, bottoms, shoes, and sleeves than before, and a whole spectrum of colors.

As for hair, you can restyle it at the barber shop in Falador, just north of the bank, also for free.

If for some reason you feel inclined to change your gender or skin tone, the makeover mage north of the crafting guild will help you out for 2000 gp.

Leveling up Skills[edit]

Skills in RuneScape involve:

  • Skills of Gathering
  • Skills of Creation
  • Skills of Modification
  • Skills of Combat

Examples of Gathering skills:

  • Mining, which allows you to mine ores to smelt and make into bars which can be used for Smithing.
  • Fishing, which allows you to catch fish with various tools, and then cook them with the Cooking skill.

Examples of Creation skills:

  • Runecrafting, which allows you to make runestones. This is a popular skill, as it allows the player a way to make a lot of money selling runes to other players.
  • Smithing, which allows you to make armour and weapons. One of the more popular skills, as it can make a lot of money for cash-strapped players, provided they have pickaxes and smithing hammers.

Examples of Modification skills:

  • Cooking, which allows you to cook food, which regenerates health.
  • Crafting, which allows you to create clothing using needles and thread.

Examples of Combat skills:

  • Attack, which affects how often you hit, how many 0s you hit, and what weapons you can wield.
  • Defense, which affects your efficiency at protecting yourself and which types of armour you can wear.

These skills can be leveled up easily in the lower levels, but as your efficiency gets higher, more experience in the skill is required to advance to the next level.

Skills are leveled up by doing the activity from which they take their name. Smithing, for example, can be leveled up by smelting bars of iron and working on them at an Anvil.
