Southern Subjugation (最南端平定戦) is the name given to the battle that takes place in the territory of Yoshihiro Shimazu. Yoshihiro is an experienced soldier whose knack for strategy has made him a respected general. His strategy is reflected in the way he conducts his soldiers on the battlefield, as he stations them in known locations around the map only to ambush you with more squad leaders as you approach. Additionally, he only makes an appearance once his army has taken enough damage, swooping in as a last resort to turn the tide of the battle.

Strategy[edit]

Proceed through the brush toward the first squad leader, whose defeat earns you the first tamatebako. Approaching him will cause three more squad leaders to appear, surrounding you on all sides. Jump over the bullets of the pesky shooters to defeat the squad leaders; though they only drop restorative items, their defeat counts toward the total required to bring Yoshihiro out into the open. You must defeat sixteen squad leaders without taking too much time to earn a special reward, though Yoshihiro will appear regardless of how much time you take.

Approach the remaining marked squad leaders in the three corners of the map to be treated to more ambushes, where only the initial squad leader drops a tamatebako. A squad of ninja attack in the southeast. Defeat them and proceed up the eastern side of the map, toward the northeast corner, for another surprise ambush, this time with only one squad leader (who drops health) surrounded by pillar-swinging soldiers. In the northeast corner of the map, past some shielded soldiers and archers, is another squad leader that drops a tamatebako. Proceed along the northern side of the map to encounter more ambushes. Depending on how much time you've taken, Yoshihiro may make his appearance, and the remaining squad leaders reveal their locations on the map. You may want to set them aside for now and approach Yoshihiro to begin the boss battle, depending on the player general's level and the selected difficulty. Yoshihiro is incredibly strong, and the restorative items that they drop may come in handy after taking only a few hits.

Additional hidden tamatebako can be found in crates scattered around the map; in the far southeastern corner, on the winding path in the northeastern corner, in the northeastern corner of the enclosed area along the eastern side of the map (where Yoshihiro makes his appearance), in the far northwestern corner, and right in front of a hill in the center of the western side of the map (near a cave where a ninja ambush has been prepared).

Boss: Yoshihiro Shimazu[edit]

Attack Yoshihiro or dodge to the side when he takes this stance to avoid a dangerous attack.

While Yoshihiro isn't very quick, his giant sword grants him considerable reach, and he is even capable of shooting large beams of lightning from his sword with a charged attack (this can be dodged or interrupted by attacking him as he charges). Block and dodge often, maintaining patience until he gives you an opening to take the offensive. Alternatively, run around the map and defeat the remaining squad leaders to build up your Basara, and defeat him using only Basara attacks. His slow movement speed makes this a viable strategy, though it's as slow as it is safe.

In order to make his attacks more powerful, Yoshihiro will occasionally take a seat and have a drink. This is the best time to attack him. As his health lowers, he will attempt to do this more often, as well as use his lightning beam skill. Wait for these opportunities to attack him. Defeat Yoshihiro to claim his territory and proclaim victory over one of the toughest bosses in the game.
