There are a total of 18 civilizations, 6 more obtained from DLC, 9 from the Gods and Kings expansion and 9 more from the Brave New World expansion. Unlike past installments of the series, each civilization no longer has general traits, but they do gain a Unique Ability that makes each civ more different from the others. Each also have a Unique Unit for and either a second Unique Unit or a Unique Building.
