Studiopolis is the first original zone in the game, created specifically for Sonic Mania. Its setting is that of a movie studio in the form of a city, with the focus of course being on Dr. Eggman. Enter giant popcorn machines, travel across great distances using satellites, and hop across spotlights to make your way through this zone.

Act 1[edit]

Have these Shutterbugs take pictures of you to unlock the achievement/trophy for this zone.

Progress forward until you come across a tall curve in the road. Take the lower path to the right, avoiding some Mic Drops on the way to a Star Post. Run into the spring and follow the path from here to an Item Box containing a Shield. Take the spring behind it to be sent into some more springs and crumbling platforms. After bumping off a bumper and rolling up a hill, take the lower path. Eventually, you should come upon a Shutterbug, which will snap pictures of you while attempting to make contact, ultimately causing damage. Make sure to keep your distance as it snaps its pictures; as long as you do this long enough, you should unlock an achievement/trophy. Now use the spring to the left to regain momentum and simply continue forward from here. Enter popcorn machines and vans to be launched to new areas and beware the platforms moving along conveyor belts; the taller characters may have to duck under some spikes.

Roll into the blue rockets to take down the Heavy Gunner and its companions.

This boss fight against one of the Hard-Boiled Heavies is unique in that you don't actually have to hit any of the enemies directly, but rather redirect some rockets that are sent your way. The screen will also be scrolling constantly, as the heroes must keep up with the flying enemies above. The Heavy Gunner will start by shooting three rockets out of a handy bazooka: two red and one blue. Dodge the red rockets and roll into the blue to send it flying right back to the Heavy Gunner. It will dodge the attack, sending one of its companions falling in its place. Repeat this pattern until all of its companions have fallen, giving you the opportunity to take down the Heavy Gunner itself. If you do happen to get hit by some red rockets, don't fret; between attacks will be short breaks, sometimes giving you the opportunity to collect more rings.

Act 2[edit]

Run or roll along these film reels to keep them moving up their tracks.

Progress forward along the upper path. You'll have to get a Tubinaut out of your way before continuing up some spotlights to higher ground. Take advantage of some new zone elements here, such as chutes that carry you across the area at high speed and funnels that reward you with some bonus points. You can also travel across gaps using film reels; simply run or roll across the surface of a reel to send it upward. A lottery ball machine can also be found in this act; keep running after falling inside to keep the balls bouncing around, and they will soon drop to reveal a random combination that automatically increases your ring count. From here, it's a straight path to the boss fight of the act.

Watch for the forecast to find out what type of weather you'll have to maneuver.

In the final boss fight for Studiopolis, Dr. Eggman tries his hand at weather manipulation. Hit him as he flies across the screen, but make sure to pay attention to the forecasts on the giant monitor in the background for a hint at which hazard you'll have to avoid:

  • If the forecast shows wind, you'll be blown up to some spikes on the ceiling. Keep moving across the screen in order to avoid a straight trip upward.
  • If the forecast shows rain, thunderclouds will appear above you. Again, simply keep moving, as standing under them is a surefire way to get struck by lightning.
  • If the forecast shows a high temperature, some spotlights will descend from the ceiling in an attempt to cook you. Stay under Eggman, as his Egg Mobile will shield you from the light.

After eight hits, Eggman will retreat. As always, free the imprisoned animals to continue to the next zone.
