Space Rogue is a balanced blend between a flight simulator and a role-playing game.

As a role-playing game, Space Rogue belongs to the sub-genre sometimes called Pokemon-like RPG, where the player character neither gets upgrades nor fights, whereas a group of creatures controlled by the character fights all the battles and receives upgrades. In the case of Space Rogue, the "creature" is the space ship.

The main character[edit]

Status of the character at the beginning of the game.

The main character actually does have some attributes. First, the status screen lists the name and the race, as well as the amount of money (Credits).

Then, there are five attributes that describe the relationship of the character with the other factions in the game: bounty hunters (i.e. the "bounty"), the Imperium, the Merchants Guild, the space pirates; there is also an attribute describing the overall reputation (abbreviated as "repute").

The spaceship[edit]

By defeating enemy speceships, the character instantly earns Credits (instead of experience points). Then, in various space stations credits can be used to upgrade the spaceship.

Credits can also be obtained and used in other ways, too. This section highlights how credits replace experience points.

The ship has four characteristics:

  • Attack
  • Defense
  • Movement
  • Cargo capacity
