Extra power ups[edit]

Barrier[edit]

Earning the barrier

Two of the asteroid fields in Adventure mode contain additional power ups, the BARRIER, and the DALTO. This is a safe, but very time-consuming, endeavor. (Unlike Star Luster's precursor, Star Raiders, asteroids can never strike the ship, so you can remain in an asteroid field without fear of sustaining damage.) In order to obtain BARRIER, you must destroy 32 asteroids. If you succeed, you will see the message "GET ITEM BARRIER" any planet that was black on the map, due to surviving an attack, will be immediately restored to light blue. Just as you cannot restore a base to light blue by visiting it, BARRIER has no effect on bases.

Dalto[edit]

Obtaining DALTO is slightly more difficult. Provided you are in the correct asteroid field, you must strike 8 asteroids continuously, without missing a single shot. If you fire and miss an asteroid, the count starts back over at 0, and you have to try again. If you earn DALTO, you will not receive any message, but the speed of the enemy squadrons on the galactic map slow down, and the ability of the squads to destroy a planet or base decreases. The effect of DALTO is not permanent, however, and will wear off after a period of time. Dalto, by the way, was the name of a spell from the Wizardry series.

Stanoid[edit]

There is one more hidden power-up that has nothing to do with asteroid fields. This power-up requires the use of the Famicom microphone in the second controller. If the Gaia is down to less than ten percent of its total energy, and one of the subsystems is in NG status, you can press the A and B button on the second controller and yell into the microphone. Provided the right conditions are met, the mysterious Stanoid will appear to replenish and repair your ship. You can only call upon his aid once per game.

Instant Breaks[edit]

It just so happens that when you press Select to switch from Combat mode to Map mode, the Gaia stops instantly. No matter how fast you are traveling, if you switch modes, your velocity will drop to zero right away. This can help you save time if you thrust as fast as possible to a base or planet, and press Select at the last second (as soon as you see the "BASE (or PLANET) LOCKED ON" message),

Secret interior design code[edit]

Think you can do worse?

Don't like the decor of the Gaia's interior? Do you think it needs a splash of color? Think you can do a better job than the game designers did? You are given the ability to try if you enter the following secret code:

  • Select button B button A button Right dpad Left dpad Up dpad Select button B button Down dpad Right dpad

If you enter the code correctly, you will be taken to the cockpit of the ship. The controls are as follows:

  • Up dpad and Down dpad: Change the color of the currently selected aspect of the ship. There are 52 different color selections available.
  • Left dpad and Right dpad: Cycle between the following ship aspects - Interior detail, Interior highlights, Interior paneling, Energy/Shield meters, Scanner boarder, Scanner background, Base/Planet Scanner color, Enemy/Date color.
