Borderline is a multi-directional shooter arcade game that was released by Sega in 1981, and it was licensed to Gremlin Industries for US manufacture and distribution (and Karateco for EU manufacture and distribution); it was the last game to run upon their Vic Dual hardware, and the player must use a four-way joystick to direct a jeep through four vertically-scrolling rounds and a single button to make it fire shots at the enemies. In the first round, the jeep is entering enemy territory through a corridor that is guarded by 50-point missiles and 100-point rockets, which can either be avoided or killed - but 100-point tanks and 200-point armoured cars may also appear here. Once you've destroyed the 300-point energy plants at the end of the corridor, you will proceed to the second round, where the jeep will find itself in a maze, that is guarded by more tanks and armoured cars; an enemy will only enter the maze in one place, then follow the path your jeep has made. Once the jeep escapes from the maze, it must again destroy the energy plants, at the top of it - and it will then proceed onto the third round, where it will find itself in another maze, which is guarded by even more tanks and armoured cars. Not only are the walls indestructible, but the enemies can also pass through the walls; once the jeep escapes from the maze, it must once again destroy the energy plants up at the top of it. It will then proceed onto the fourth (and last unique) round, where it will find itself in a third (and final) maze, that is guarded by still more tanks and armoured cars - and they will only shoot through the maze walls to enter it once, then again follow the path that your jeep has made. Once the jeep has escaped from the maze, it must yet again destroy the, energy plant at the top of it; this one is also protected by revolving armaments, and is worth 1000 points. Sega also re-released this game under the naming of "Star Raker" later in 1981, which featured a new title screen, slightly modified character sprites and a new setting of deep space.
