There are several tactics for a space battle. A good pilot can use many of them, or perfect one to dominate the fight.

The first and most simple is to dogfight, a scout is best (e.g. A wing, TIE interceptor etc.) Lock on to an enemy ship and follow it. A white circle should appear. Keep following the ship until the circle turns red. Then fire away with your secondary blasters. Repeat, all the while firing your primary blasters.

The second is to take out the main ship from the outside. A bomber is best (e.g. Y wing, TIE bomber etc.) because obviously it has the best tools for the job. Take note that your bombs (secondary) fall downward as they progress so either fire at close range or fly up then dive-bomb the ship. Also you have no lock-on system in a bomber.

The shield is first to be taken down. It must be to get at anything else. Attack any part of the ship, preferably the underside as there are no turrets and few enemy ships. After the shield is down, attack any of the vital systems. These are the command bridge, life support systems, engines, sensor relay, and turrets. There are also some escort ships that have no shield.

The third strategy is to destroy the enemy base ship from the inside out. A marine unit is best for this because it is equipped with a blaster rifle and rocket launcher. You can use a transport so that you can stage a full on invasion or take a scout or combo ship for speed.

As soon as you are inside the enemy hangar, head for the door behind the cp. You may be targeted but don't return fire, keep running. Once inside the base, destroy the shield generator through one of the doors on the left, right, or center. Then go out into the hangar and go to the ammo droid and shoot anyone who comes near. Then take out the turret defence mainframe directly inside the base. After that, take out the engines and life support in no particular order. Remember to look out for autoturrets and enemy troops.

A good suggestion would be to do each of these in this order: First strategy 2 because the enemy ship will be weak during the rest of the battle. Also there will be fewer dogfighters in space and more troops in the hanger in the beginning. Then for the majority of the battle that follows, dogfight, and in the very end, sabotage.
