Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith is the first-person shooter expansion for Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II set in the Star Wars universe, developed and published by LucasArts for Windows in 1998. It includes 14 Single Player missions and 15 Multiplayer maps, allowing up to eight players to play online or over LAN. The previous game's discs are needed to play for the first time after physical installation, but they aren't needed later and don't ever need to be installed. This game was re-released on Steam in 2009 and digital installation and play is fully independent, although the manual only covers new features or those that work differently from its predecessor.
The game features several technical improvements over its predecessor, including colored lighting, new textures and models, and improved artificial intelligence. It received mostly positive critic reviews, with praise for the game's story and AI improvements.
Story[edit | edit source]
The game takes place more than five years since Jerec was defeated at the Valley of the Jedi by Kyle Katarn in Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, after Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. For the first four Single Player missions the player is Kyle Katarn, the protagonist of the two previous games in the series, continuing his pursuit of the light side of the Force and joining the fragile New Republic in the struggle against the remnants of the Empire.
For the ten remaining Single Player missions the player is Mara Jade, a young smuggler and once a powerful agent of the Emperor, but swayed from the dark path by Luke Skywalker himself. Mara sought out Kyle hoping he might further her Jedi training, aiding him and seeking knowledge of her re-emerging power and any role she will play in the continuing struggle for the galaxy.
