Click here for more information about Ken's other fighting game appearances.

Ken, like his friend and rival Ryu, first appeared in the original Street Fighter. However, despite this appearance, Ken did not officially participate in the first Street Fighter tournament; instead, he fought in (and won) the premiere U.S. Martial Arts tournament that had been previously won by Charlie, as well as meeting a girl named Eliza, who became his girlfriend. After winning the U.S. martial arts tournament, Ken returned to his training ground to tell his master Gouken the good news. There he witnessed his master's death at the hands of Akuma. Enraged and grief stricken, he attacked Akuma, only to be defeated.

He began wandering the world in search of Akuma, and his friend and fellow student Ryu. He wanted to tell Ryu what happened to their master and also hoped to win a match against him. He eventually finds Ryu in seclusion. Ryu is dejected upon seeing his long-time friend, but Ken makes him go try out a spar anyway. Over the next few days, Ken realizes how stressed out his best friend is since his fight with Sagat. Ryu explains to Ken that deep within him there is a burning rage- a power trying to overcome him. Giving Ryu his red headband, Ken tells him to stay focused, which greatly cheers Ryu up. Ken returns home and begins training harder. Knowing even with his recent feelings, that Ryu is always stronger than he looks.

Ken begins to wonder about his own life. Ryu seemed to be on the right track again, but what of him? Along the way to prove himself again, he encounters Karin who tells him she has followed his career and is trying to best her rival Sakura to prove she is superior. Ken advises her it's good to have a rival, but not for supremacy, but to keep on training harder and focusing. With this, Ken finds himself again and is focused once more. Going off to meet up with Sakura, they too have a friendly match and Ken finally realizes that Ryu has the right idea all along. Both he and Sakura begin to travel to find Ryu, but find out that he's being brainwashed by the dictator M. Bison. Ken and Sakura both take Bison on together to distract him as Sagat (who had come along to also find Ryu struggling against Bison) took Ryu under control. Ryu eventually came to and slammed Bison away with the help of Ken, then talked to each of his friends — he told Ken to wait for his rematch, noting he still had much to learn. Ken himself promised to train harder.

Techniques[edit]

Name Description
Hadouken Ken gathers all of his ki into his fists, and releases it by pushing it forward through the air. He can release it at three different speeds. Ken's Hadouken, though quite effective, isn't as concentrated as Ryu's, and he has a slower recovery time.
Shoryuuken Ken crouches down low to the ground, before springing off the ground, leading with his fist. The force of the jump causes Ken to rise off the ground, performing a ground to air uppercut. Ken has practiced this move to the point where, at its strongest, Ken can summon a field of flames around his fist, setting opponents on fire if it connects. Ken performs the Shoryuken in such a way that it allows him to connect with the opponent three times before knocking them down or back. He also leaps forward a lot farther then Ryu when performing them.
Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku Ken leaps off the ground, twisting his feet as he does. Then, extending one leg out, he approaches the opponent spinning around as if in a whirlwind. Ken can spin his body so quickly, that it allows him to hit opponents with this attack up to five times without knocking them down. Ken can also use this move while midair.
Zenpou Tenshin Ken is able to perform a defensive roll. The roll allows him to counterattack and he can even roll through them to attack them from behind.
Zentou Ken tries to roll forward but fails and lies on the ground. This is a fake out move designed to attack an opponent who tries to counter attack a Zenpou Tenshin. Ken lies so low on the ground that most standing attacks can't hit him, but crouching attacks will.
Inazuma Kakato Wari Ken does a high axe kick that can hit multiple times.
Izumu Kakato Wari Ken does a high roundhouse that hits multiple times.
Ushiro Mawashi-geri Ken does a powerful side kick that sends opponents flying.
Shoryuu Reppa After many years spent on focusing on the strength of his Shoryuuken, Ken is able to perform multiple shoryuukens back to back. He does two normal shoryukens, and if it is a level 3 super, finishes off with a powerful burning Shoryuuken.
Shinryuuken Ken also developed another technique based on his Shoryuukens. He can now do a deadly ascending spinning Shoryuuken. Tapping the Punch or Kick buttons during the move can increase the number of hits in the super. The number of hits are also dependent on the level of the super.
Shippuujinrai Kyaku Ken didn't only focus on his Shoryuukens, he also developed a new technique with his Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku. Ken does a series of roundhouse kicks and ends with an ascending Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku.
