Furniture images[edit]
I'm thinking about whether to remove the image column of these furniture tables. Of course, having images in the tables would be preferable since players will have an idea what they look like, but it could make the page way too long that we might need to separate this page into multiple subpages. - I would say keep it. We could fix the size with px (pixel) to adjust the length of the images, but there are surely enough other Methods to try out to make it look good. On the other hand it seems there are really alot of Furniture. So subpages would be better, but how should it be splitted up? Paco (talk) 09:12, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
- Last week I started taking screenshots of the furniture I had in my catalogue. It's not looking great - the items spin around which makes it tough to get consistent pics. Could we maybe remove the image column from the table and add a gallery for each instead? Images from the catalogue and maybe a couple from in a house might be nice. As for splitting it up - I'm not sure what the best way to go about it. There are 41 series (I think). Is it possible to make the furniture page like a category page and then that could contain all the links series? Not sure what the policy on that is --Minx (talk) 11:26, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

- We might need a separate column or even an entire subsection of pages. Creating a gallery of furniture will make the page visually longer and less tidy, so doing so will definitely mean separating the furniture page into subpages. There are multiple groups that furniture belong in, but some furniture don't belong in any group, some overlap and overall the number of furniture in each group isn't balanced. For example, if we were to make a page about furniture in a series and another page of furniture in sets, the series page will be much longer. As for furniture screenshots, I prefer a roughly isometric view of that item instead of a front view as it displays more sides of the furniture. T.testLP(talk) 05:26, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

- So what is the final decision? I don't want to make more tables until we've settled on a solution. Removing all the image columns will be more tedious the more tables are added beforehand. T.testLP(talk) 10:10, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, had a think about how I would want to use this page as a player - I think the way you have started would be good. Yes the page will be long but I can use the TOC to jump to the Series I care about and it still looks tidy and whatnot. I think images in the table are fine, although it might look a little empty while we fill them up. Having images included is what makes a wiki superior to other formats so I think we should use them whenever possible. Maybe we should have a note somewhere about standards for taking furniture pictures for this page. Or do you feel that if we get a handful of examples in, future editors can follow our lead.--Minx (talk) 13:13, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
- My biggest worry is that all those images would cause the page to load very slowly, especially for readers with poorer internet connections, which is why it might be wise to split the page up. - How about a table with a row for each series, one image from the series to show style of furniture and then link to a subpage for that series which would have the full table with all the items in the series, like the tables on this page at the minute? for example:

- That is actually a really good idea for a furniture hub page. The only problem is linking the series pages to the ToC. I'm starting to think we should use a catalog subheader on the ToC to allow easier navigation between furniture, clothing and other items, all tucked away inside its own collapsible section. - It's a bit late to post this, but I've tested how the images would work if they were merged with the name column here. They don't look very pretty, so I think that unless another solution comes up, an image gallery like Minx suggested would probably be the best solution. --T.testLP(talk) 11:09, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Refurbished furniture images[edit]
Creating a separate heading to discuss this, as the issues here are very different from normal furniture images. We are obviously going to cover how each furniture can be refurbished, as the guide wouldn't be complete without that information, but what about capturing all the images of refurbished furniture, if we even decide to do it? While not every furniture can be refurbished, furniture that can will sometimes have a lot of styles that can be used, so images of refurbished furniture may end up outnumbering images of the furniture themselves. Furthermore, we don't have the option of snapping a screenshot from the catalog, so we need to devise a method to make sure every image displays their differences clearly and maintain a consistent style. One way I suggest it by renting a museum exhibit room solely for images of refurbished furniture. The bland wallpaper and carpet helps the furniture to stand out more, while the neutral white lighting ensures that the color of the furniture in each image is accurate. - I've see lots of refurbed furniture via the HHA Showcase. When you streetpass someone you can view their house and have the option to order the furniture they have. It appears like the Nookling's catalogue. It's handy to get screenshots of stuff you don't own. I've not touched any of the refurb stuff in my game yet. I'm happy to start stockpiling ore for the purposes of providing images of the refurbed stuff. Minx (talk) 11:20, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- Using StreetPass for the photos would take way too much time, as there are tons of refurbishable furniture, each with a varied number of styles one can choose from, and some even have a combination of styles, such as a bed with separate options for the bedsheet and the frame. Getting every one of them through StreetPass is too unreliable and time-consuming. --T.testLP(talk) 09:33, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
- If there are a crazy amount of customizations do we need to worry about images right off? I think descriptions would be fine to get us started. As I mentioned, I've not looked at any of this stuff yet so I don't really know the scope of the work required. I'm not sure if we have anyone that can put that amount of time needed into getting images of every possible option. It's something I might be able to do *eventually* but I feel that there are other areas of the guide that need work before getting into this sort of project. As for the streetpass idea - if 2 people who know each other IRL work together, they could easily fill a 6 room house with loads of the furniture. Then the models will be updated when the pass. Could be doable..? Another option is getting a screengrab from the workshop in Re-Tail as the item is created. - You have a point that it isn't a very big priority right now. It's just an ambitious idea for the guide, since there are almost no sources on the web that contains pictures of every refurbished furniture, and pulling off something like that will really make the guide stand out. Also, I can't believe I never thought of the Re-Tail option, and the StreetPass option seems more possible. --T.testLP(talk) 09:27, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

I've started creating a stockpile of images for this. Currently I'm picking one item from each set to customise (like the bed or table) and then just using that one item to show all the options that Cyrus offers. I've not done any that can take clothing/custom designs yet (like the Alpine set can) but I think I have plenty to get on with for now! Once the uploads are turned on again I'll start adding the images and we can get a better idea of how it's gonna look. --Minx (talk) 11:43, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
