Damage Resistance[edit]

Where does the information that the '/-' construct indicates subtracted damage come from? Given the origin of many of the game's mechanics, it could instead simply mean that the damage resistance has no automatic method to bypass it (thus also explaining the lack of the hypothetical '/+' construct.) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 185.16.207.54 (talkcontribs) 17:55, 24 June 2022‎‎.

That line (/− simply means that the value is subtracted from that damage type: /+ would mean that the value is added to the damage type, but this is never used.) was added to this page on 14 February 2021, and KotORII's Combat page on 3 February 2021. That was over a year ago, I didn't mention a source in either edit summary and I don't remember now: likely it came from a response to a post or comment on the kotor subreddit asking what the /- notation meant.
If that isn't what it means, then I can remove that line from both Combat pages (I don't think it affects the understanding of what Damage Resistance does). Onderduiker (talk) 22:23, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Critical hit damage[edit]

I'm putting this here for future reference for when I revise this page (among others), but also because it contradicts information from other sources I've seen and, although it can be verified by looking at Feedback, it requires a little time and effort because it isn't immediately obvious.

I've recently learned that most items are simply modified versions of base items: the example I'll use here is an Echani Foil, which is a modified Vibrosword. Vibroswords display Damage: Physical, 2-12 (2d6) while an Echani Foil displays Damage: Physical, 5-15 (2d6 + 3). I'd already established that constant damage bonuses from upgrade items aren't doubled by a critical hit (by the same means described below), so the critical damage of an Echani Foil might be calculated one of two ways:

Damage Option 1 Option 2
Min Max Min Max
First roll 2 12 2 12
Bonus 3 3 3 3
Critical roll 2 12 2 12
Bonus 3 3
Total 7 27 10 30

A critical hit inflicting 7-9 damage would indicate that option 1 was correct, while inflicting > 27 damage would indicate that option 2 was correct. A character with 10 Strength (STR 0) used an Echani Foil with Master Critical Strike and Master Speed to attack a droid with no damage resistance until a critical hit inflicted 9 damage, indicating option 1 was correct (and 25 was the highest I saw).

I actually started testing by attacking Darth Malak, but changed to clarify an unanticipated result due to his Master Toughness. A character using an Echani Foil with STR +17 once inflicted just 38 critical damage, when the minimum expected was 39 (2+2 + 17+17 + 3 - 2): this indicates that Improved or Master Toughness subtracts from the +3 bonus separately, despite it being the same damage type as the weapon (since (2+3 + 17+17 - 2 + 3-2 = 38).

I should really check whether Improved or Master Toughness subtracts from total critical damage as displayed in Feedback or whether it might actually subtract from the two damage rolls separately, but that seems unlikely and I've done enough for my current purposes (how to properly express damage for NPCs in the walkthrough... like the Sith diplomat in the Sith base on Manaan who uses, and drops, an Echani Foil).
