Disambiguation[edit]

To be clear, there is another version of Super Punch-Out!! (with the same two exclamation points), which was released in the arcade one year after the original arcade Punch-Out was released. Technically, since it came out first, it should get the Super Punch-Out!! title, and this should technically be labeled as Super Punch-Out!! (SNES), but since we don't currently have an article for the arcade version, and this version is the better known of the two, it's debatable if we should disambiguate this now, or later. You know, that brings up a good question. How do we determine which game gets the title without the parentheses. Should it be based off of chronology, first-come-first-serve, or whichever is most popular? Or should we just tack on the parentheses for both games? I think the "most popular" consideration could conceivably leave us with some problems down the road (how do you determine which game is more popular), but it also seems to make the most sense. Like in this case, I would prefer to see the SNES game be given Super Punch-Out!! and the arcade Super Punch-Out!! (Arcade), because I think more people would be interested in finding the SNES version. I also don't think we need to rush the disambiguation, but a good policy should be determined sooner rather than later.--DukeRuckleyTalk | Contribs 19:54, 27 May 2008 (CDT)
Giving it to the first chronological game has been the unofficial policy, and it's a good one for the following reason: Just because version 2 is more popular than version 1, doesn't mean that version 3 won't become even more popular than version 2. It the matter is truly ambiguous (like if the original was virtually unknown) than the name should be used for nothing more than a disambiguation page, and both titles should receive parentheses. I think in this case, it is sufficient for this version to remain where it is as long as a disambiguation tag directs people to Super Punch-Out!! (Arcade), unless we decide that the rule should be hard and fast, in which case, this should be moved to Super Punch-Out!! (SNES). Procyon (Talk) 21:04, 27 May 2008 (CDT)

I would say go with the easiest for everyone. If nothing is created yet, use the non-parenthesized for the most popular version. Everything else gets brackets. But if a more popular version of an old game comes out, just put brackets for the new one, and add a {{game disambig}} to the old one (not worth moving everything again). Avoid disambiguation pages as much as possible. -- Prod (Talk) 00:24, 28 May 2008 (CDT)
