The Gratitude Crystal Sidequest can be started as soon as you bring the Ruby Tablet back to the Goddess Statue on Skyloft. When Kukiel goes missing you find her in the company of her friend, the demon Batreaux (see mission below for details). Batreaux however is not evil, and in fact wants to get rid of his demon guise. He hopes to accomplish this by collecting Gratitude Crystals. These conveniently appear when you help people. Of course Batreaux can't just wander around Skyloft, so he deputizes Link to collect the Crystals for him, offering rewards at certain intervals.

This guide will help you find all the Gratitude Crystals in the game. Most can be collected by helping out the various inhabitants of Skyloft in self contained missions, but 15 Crystals can be found just lying around the place at night.

Rewards[edit]

Crystals Reward
5 Medium Wallet (can hold 500 rupees)
10 Piece of Heart (only reward not related to money)
30 Big Wallet (can hold 1000 rupees) and Cursed Medal
40 Gold Rupee (worth 300 rupees)
50 Giant Wallet (can hold 5000 rupees)
70 2 Gold Rupees (worth 600 rupees)
80 Tycoon Wallet (can hold 9000 rupees)

Wryna's Request[edit]

You get this request automatically after placing the Ruby Tablet fragment into the Ancient Tablet's aperture in the Statue of the Goddess. Wryna's daughter, Kukiel, has gone missing and she fears a monster is somehow involved. Talk to Parrow in the plazza and his sister, Orielle, to recieve the most useful clues: that there is a monster rumored to live in the graveyard, and an old man who spends most of his time hanging out at the Lumpy Pumpkin claims to have seen it. Fly out there and speak to him. The old man tells you that if you go to the graveyard at night and hit the headstone closest to the tree, the door to the storehouse will mysteriously open. You also need to push the headstone after you hit it with your sword. This opens the door to the storehouse. When the storehouse in the graveyard opens, walk to the ladder and climb down. This takes you to an isolated house that sits on a series of isolated platforms beneath Skyloft. You'll find Kukiel inside the house with her "friend," who turns out to be a horrible-looking monster whose name is Batreaux. Despite Batreaux's terrifying visage, he's actually a kind-hearted soul who loves people. Unfortunately, he scares the snot out of most townspeople, so he can't live above in Skyloft with everyone else. Batreaux has heard that if a monster can obtain enough Gratitude crystals from humans, though, that monster will transform into a human. Naturally, Batreaux wants Link to go out and gather all the Gratitude Crystals for him. This may sound like Batreaux game the system, it's ultimately for the best that you do this for the poor guy. Begin after you meet Batreaux by sleeping until , then going to Kukiel's house and speaking to Wryna inside. Kukiel has returned home, as promised. Her mother gives you your first stack of 5 Gratitude Crystals.

Skyloft by Night[edit]

As mentioned above, 15 Gratitude Crystals can be found just lying around during the night. 10 of these are accessible right away. Here are the locations of these 10 Crystals. Sleep in any room to make it nighttime before starting

  • If you sleep in Link's room, you can grab the first crystal right there
  • Leave the academy on the ground floor and walk over to the Sparring Hall. he crystal is hidden in the rafters in the back of the room. Use the beetle to grab it.
  • One Crystal is inside the Academy right next to the front door on the upper level.
  • If you leave the academy grounds by the gate on the lower floor, the first house on the left you will encounter is Parrow and Orielle's. There is a crystal in the corner of there living room.
  • Right across from this house is the southern Windmill and to its right you can climb down some vines to a platform that has a crystal (if you are lazy, the beetle can fly down there and grab the crystal)
  • Moving further south, you reach the main Plaza with the Light Tower. Climb to the base of the tower and walk around it to find a crystal
  • Go east and across the bridge to the residential area. Find the big pumpkin patch. There is a crystal behind the tree in that area
  • Now use the stones to jump across the river to the Waterfall cave. Fight your way through the cave and a Crystal awaits you at the exit.
  • Move on toward the small cave where you found Link's Loftwing earlier for another Crystal
  • When you run back to the academy to rest, stop at the norther exit of the Bazaar. One level down (going east) are wooden planks and on the next grassy patch is the last Crystal (This one is hard to explain. It can help to use the beetle to scout the area and grab the Crystal)

Now go back to the academy and sleep until morning. You can now go to Batreaux and claim the first 2 rewards.

Rescuing Orielle[edit]

This mission can be undertaken as soon as Kukiel has returned home, but there is no hurry, because you can't get enough Gratitude Crystals for the next reward until later anyway.

When you cross the main Plaza next to the Lighthouse, you see Parrow stalking around with a bubble over his head (the international signal for 'I have something to say'). It turns out that Orielle has taken her Loftwing out for a ride, and has not returned. Of course, it's up to you to find her (what exactly are all those knights doing all day). The hint here is that she had wanted to check out the 'colorful island' in the west (you might not have visited this island yet, unless you did some exploring). Get airborne and fly West (use a beacon on the island and head straight toward it). Stay relatively low, or you might miss the very small island where Orielle made an emergency landing. Her Loftwing is hurt and could Link please get some medicine from Parrow?

Go back to Skyloft and make sure you carry and empty bottle (one would think Parrow could spare one right?). Talk to Parrow and he will give you Loftwing medicine (Mushroom Spores). Head back out west and witness the workings of this miracle drug that heals broken wings in seconds. 5 Gratitude Crystals will appear from Rescuing Orielle. To double your reward head back to Skyloft and give Parrow the happy news for 5 more Crystals will appear. That brings your total up to 25.

You will have to take a break from collecting Crystals now, until you return from the Lanyru Mining Facility

Spring Cleaning[edit]

So you are back from Lanyru? And even though the situation is dire and the fate of the world rests on your shoulders you want to know how to get a bigger wallet? Well the next mission awaits you in Pipit's house (close to the bridge, the map should tell you where it is).

The house is full of dust and it turns out Pipit's mother Mallara is simply to lazy to do anything about it. She doesn't even have a broom. Her solution is usually to open the door when there is a strong wind and hope for the best. Well, she's willing to pay Link to clean up for her, provided he won't tell Pipit about it, since Mallara is perfectly aware that her request is somewhat ridiculous.

If you agree you will automatically equip the Dust Bellows, so go to work. The floor is obvious, but don't forget the walls, shelves and even windows. Mallara will tell you when you are done, so just keep going until she stops you. She will pay you the promised red rupee, but 5 Gratitude Crystals will also appear.

With 30 Crystals collected, you can now head back to Batreaux to get the Big Wallet.

Fledge's training - Part 1[edit]

At this point, you can also start your quest to make your buddy Fledge into a stronger cadet. You won't be able to finish this Mission and reap the rewards until later, but starting now will make for a nice story progression.

If you speak with Fledge occasionally outside the top exit of the academy, he might tell you about how he wants to train to become stronger. Now sleep somewhere to make it night and go into Fledge's room (to save time you can actually use his own bed). At night you will find Fledge doing push ups in his room and failing quite miserably. If only he had a potion that would give him more stamina so he could work out longer he says. Get the hint?

Make it daytime again and go to the Bazaar. Depending on when you do this, the potion lady might already have told you about her new Stamina Potion. If not, just get an empty bottle from the checkout counter (you should have 3 bottles by now) and buy some of the green stuff for 50 rupees (the things we do for our friends). Back to Fledge's room, sleep into the night and give him the potion when he asks for it. He will go back to his workout and you can go on to whatever else you had planned during the night.

Next time you see Fledge it will be round the Plaza and he will be very excited. This is as far as you can go with this Mission for now. We'll get back to it later.

Love is in the Air[edit]

Romance is afoot at Skyloft Academy and of course, it's up to you to sort it all out. Except in this case, you really cannot sort it ALL out.

This mission becomes available around the time you first go into the Thunderhead. Walking around there are several hints you can encounter. One of the men eating in the Bazaar will tell you that there are rumors about a woman crying at night in the dormitories. If you visit Karane's room at night (naughty boy), she will kick you out and tell you she wants to take a bath but that it's occupied.

Go to the downstairs bathroom at night and the sobbing voice will ask you to bring her paper. Next, go back to daytime and find Cawlin hanging out next to the main door on the lower level. He will ask you (in his usual gruff manner) to give a letter to Karane. It seems he has had a crush on her for a while. He specifically says that the letter should not be used as toilet paper.

Now you have 2 options, you cannot make everyone happy. Here are the sequences to follow for each option:

  • Take the letter to the bathroom at night and find a ghostly hand. Give the letter to it, then go back to daytime and talk to Cawlin. He's understandably angry so follow him to Groose's room, and when he is done talking come back at nighttime. The hand will be with Cawlin, and very happy (you the 5 Gratitude Crystals from it). It was so moved by the letter that it's now in love with Cawlin.
  • Give the letter to Karane (in the classroom during daytime), an find out that she is actually in love with Pipit, even though she likes the letter. Talk to Pipit upstairs to clear the matter up. Go back to the classroom where Karane is talking to Cawlin, and Pipit will follow. Karana chooses Pipit and you will get 5 Gratitude Crystals from him.

It's really up to you which option top choose, you can only get 5 Crystals either way.

Finding Dodoh's Party Wheel[edit]

You can start this mission after the windmill sequence, when you first get Scrapper.

Maybe you already visited the colorful island of Dodoh in the western sky. Dodoh runs an a game here, except he has lost his party wheel. It has fallen below the clouds and everyone know nothing can be recovered from there. Except of course that now that you have Scrapper, it can.

Fi tells you the wheel is most likely in the Lanayru Region (Duh... the entrance to that is practically next to the island), and sets you up with 'Party Wheel Dowsing'. So head over the Lanayru Region and use the desert entrance statue to land. The rock behind you contains a Timeshift Crystal, so use a bomb on it and activate the crystal. Climb up the vine and use dowsing to find the wheel (it's really quite straight forward). After Scrapper picks up the wheel, check the area for a treasure chest then head back into the sky.

Visit Dodoh again and you get 5 Gratitude Crystals. Dodoh will also let you play his game now, in which you can win a Piece of Heart. You should be up to 40 Crystals now, so head back to Batreaux to get a Golden Rupee.

Love of an Item Check Girl[edit]

Technically this mission has been going on for a while. It just progresses as you sleep and change time from day to night, which you should have done often enough by to finish of this mission.

As the days go by, you might have noticed that Peatrice, the Item check girl has taken a shine to you. First quite grumpy she becomes more and more excited when you come to her counter. During the night, you can visit her at her house (located right next to the Bazaar) and meet her father Peater. He is very angry because he thinks someone is taking advantage of his darling daughter.

Next time you go to her counter during the day, Peatrice will ask you to come see her at night. Sleep in her house to make to avoid the commute and talk to her. As in Cawlin's mission you have 2 choices here (none of which is very ideal):

  • Tell her that you like her and you get 5 Gratitude Crystals right away, and she will now be pining for you every time you see her (this feels a little sleazy since you are really with Zelda)
  • Break her heart, and she will mope at her counter for the rest of the game (not nice, but maybe fairer). Sleep in her house until the next night and talk to Peater. He's excited that his daughter has broken of her affair, and you get the 5 Crystals from him instead.
