Part A[edit]

Legendary Axe Zone 3A a.png

Right from the start, you'll be attacked by a green nomad, accompanied by some poisonous moths. When you start descending down a set of steps, the first eagle will show up. Eagles fly back and forth through the air a few times until they reach the right side of the screen, and begin to descend to your level. When they are approximately even with your head, they fly forward. This is your chance to strike them and keep them away from you, and possibly destroying them with a full strength strike. It's always safer to stop advancing when an eagle appears, and remove it from the screen before continuing. A second eagle will attack when you approach the bottom of the steps.

After you jump across the gap, you will see more ledges ahead of you to jump on. However, it is possible to safely fall down to the floor below. There is an item statue on the floor that is easy to miss if you stay along the top. Either way that you go, you will encounter your first golem. Golems initially look like plain square rocks until you get close, and then they pop up to attack. Their main form of attack is to swing their arm out at your head. You are generally safe from their attack if you squat down. Strike at them before they get too close. The item statue along the bottom contains a health item.

Across the next gap, you should traverse the top path to find the next item statue. Along the way, a green nomad and another eagle will appear. Destroy the statue when they are cleared away to obtain another health item. If you stay along the top when you cross the gap, you will be forced to deal with a golem and two eagles. You can avoid the golem by dropping down to the floor first. If you remain on the low path all the way, you will find a set of item statues that you might otherwise miss. You have to jump over several gaps to reach each one, and you will be forced to backtrack after you collect them, but you will obtain some health items, several jewels to increase your score, and at the very end, one of the statues will contain an extra life. After you collect them, you must return to the left until you are able to jump up to a ledge above the floor and continue along the higher path to the right.

Along the high path, you will have to defeat a golem before the leap to the next ledge, and another one after the leap. In both cases, you must defend yourself against getting knocked back too far, or you will be at risk of getting pushed off the ledge and losing a life. After collecting a health item from a statue (or an axe power-up if you died and continued from here) you will encounter a blue skinned nomad. Blue skinned nomads are hardier than the ones you've encountered in the past, and they know a new trick: throwing their axes. Not only will they throw them at you, but they can throw them high or low. You can actually swat them out of the air with your own axe, but be prepared to face them. If you don't knock them out with a single 50% strength hit, they will perform backflips when you hit them to put distance between you, and throw another axe.

For the next portion of the stage, you must clear a large number of blue nomads from your path. Try to hit them at full strength to reduce their chances of throwing more axes at you. After the jump, you must choose between another high path and low path. Like before, choosing the low path puts you on a track to some items and a dead-end. You'll have to ride a floating platform across a gap to get there, and all you will find is some health items (unless you're missing a Speed increase, in which case you'll find one here) before you have to go back and take the higher path.

Along the higher path, you'll be attacked by two green nomads and an eagle. Then you must jump up and grab the swinging vine. You must leap over to a second swinging vine, and your timing must be correct or you'll miss the vine and plummet to your death. The vines move at slightly different rates, and you want the second vine to almost start approaching you when the first vine is nearing the end of its trip to the right. Beyond the second vine, you will be attacked by bears who resemble the two you fought as the boss of the first zone. These gray bears take more hits to defeat. When the second one appears, it will be near a golem. Don't approach it and wake up the golem or you will have two threats to deal with (three if you count the eagle overhead). Instead, lure it to the left and deal with it alone, and then return to destroy the golem. Then attack the item statue for a health item before proceeding to the end of this section.

Part B[edit]

Upon reach the next section, you will be greeted by two new nomads: blue nomads and red nomads. They each know a different trick; blue nomads like to leap through the air when they attack, and red nomads will only ever squat down and attack you low. Having a mix of them on the screen is potentially dangerous. Try to deal with them individually when they appear before you get overwhelmed. Before you reach the first item statue containing a health item, you will be attacked by one of each type.

Next, you must swing over a very large gap using three vines. Just as in the previous section, you must be very careful when timing your jumps so that the next vine is on its way back to you by the time you leap from the previous vine. Once you drop down from the third vine, jump over the small waterfall and prepare to deal with a golem and an eagle. There is an item statue here with a health item. When you attempt to jump over the next waterfall, a Frog Man will hop straight up from the water, and spit a fireball at you before dropping back down. Jump over right after it has sunk below, and before it can leap up again. The following waterfall contains two Frog Men, and the waterfall after that contains just one.

Past the waterfalls, you will have to destroy two golems. Then you must carefully cross the next section by leaping from one stone to the next. Missing a stone, or getting struck and falling backwards will typically cost you a life. Watch out for the Frog Man which leaps up part of the way through. You can safely ignore the golem near the end. Back on land, Frog Men will still leap up through the floor. They appear just before you reach item statues along the way. These statues will contain health items. Then you must cross another section by leaping from rock to rock. The Frog Men will be much more active here.

Back on the ground, you will be attacked by another new enemy. Tribal warriors with large curved swords will approach you. When you see the first one, stop and deal with it before advancing and attracting the second one to the fight. These warriors swing their sword when you they get close to you. Ducking down won't save you from their swing entirely, but it does make you a smaller target. Get in attacks against them after they complete swinging their sword.

After defeating the second warrior, advance to where you see small logs floating down the waterfall. Jump to one and then continuously jump up to the higher one until you can reach the ledge on the right. Then leap over to the next set of small logs. Ride one down until you can see an item statue on a lower ledge. Destroy this statue and you will find a key. Collect it, and the waterfall to the right will clear away, revealing a path to four item statues. Among these statues, you will find a large health item, and an axe power-up. If you haven't lost any yet, this will be your third, and give you access to 75% of your strength meter. Once you collect it, head back to the left, jump up the small logs, and proceed to the right along the higher path.

Along this path, you will face a golem, a tribal warrior, and another golem. As you begin to drop down the steps, a third golem will be waiting, and a blue nomad will join the fight against you. Clear them away, and walk to the right. You will begin to see a set of item statues. Be on the look out for a final crouching nomad in red who appears from the left. It is better to attack and remove him before you continue to the end of the zone and trigger the boss.

Boss[edit]

When you reach the end of this zone, five flying objects which resemble a demonic eyeball appear and begin hovering over your head. If you squat down, you will be avoid colliding with them. They will insist on hovering directly over you for quite a while, resulting in damage if you dare to stand up. Eventually, they will wander off very briefly. When they do, they fly back and forth along the top of the screen. One eyeball will release a trio of fireballs as it passes through the middle of the screen. These fireballs will spread out as they fall, but if Gogan is in either corner of the screen, he will remain safe. It is when the eyeballs start flying along the top that you should leap up and strike one of them with your axe. Obviously, you should try to do this when your power meter is full. If you have an opportunity to strike more than one eyeball, you should take it. However, knocking one of the eyeballs out of sequence from the other may result in making it harder to stand up if one decides to linger over your head long after the others have begun flying along the top. In the end, this is a long slow battle that requires patience to survive.
